One of hottest trends in our society is the selfie. If you are somehow unfamiliar with what a selfie is, let me explain. A selfie is the act of simultaneously acting as both the photographer and the subject of the photograph. Even if you’ve never taken a selfie, you’ve most certainly seen a selfie being taken by another person at some point in time. T
o my count, selfies are seemingly taken all the time and in all places. When you really think about how often these “self photographs” are taken, it is quite alarming. One could argue that society is obsessed with taking photographs of themselves and have a valid point in doing so.
While an obsession with selfies is a very real and alarming reality, I believe that there is a bigger problem that underlies our selfie-crazed society. The problem is that we have become an entirely self-focused society. As with the selfie, our minds have been altered to focus only on self instead of others or even society as a whole.
The issue seems to be ever growing as does the selfie and seems to be a slippery slope for our society. The roots of American society are ones that encourage cooperation, assistance to others in need, and friendly interaction with one another. Somehow we have gotten far, far away from those original American principles. Society needs less “selfie” and more emphasis on others!
