Why is it so easy to look down on ourselves? We’re not good enough, thin enough, we couldn’t help everyone that needed us, and we’ve done too many shameful things.
We come up with all of these faults and somehow what we think is wrong with us defines us and makes us worthless. We’re so ready to believe that there’s no place for us on this earth; that we are a waste of space just taking up resources. This may be hard to believe but we are worth something.
We aren’t just a waste of space.
At the core of our being we desire someone to look at us and say that we are important and needed. Some of us hear our whole lives that we will never amount to anything.
Others are constantly told they are worth everything. What if we knew without any lingering doubts that we actually have worth? There is a way to know that it's true and it is found in God and His word.
In Matthew 10:29-31 he records Jesus saying “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows”. God takes care of the birds and they aren’t even the epitome of His creation; we are.
He is constantly watching and taking care of us and the ultimate proof of our worth was shown with Jesus. Before we were even born or decided to give our lives to Him, he suffered and died for us. God wouldn’t do that for something that was worthless. We are so important that God would give up His only son just so that we could be with Him.
So if we are actually worth something what does that mean? It means stop measuring your worth from performance or physical appearance. It means that if you get rejected it’s not the end of the world. It means that when it seems like no one cares we can know for sure that at least the Creator of everything does. Once we stop worrying about being worth something God can use us in enormous ways. Our focus is no longer on us but on Him and the people around us.
This is why it is so easy to believe the lie that we are nothing. Because the moment we realize just how important we are is the moment our enemy, Satan, loses. It’s the moment that we’re free.
Free to live in Christ and His grace. Free to be whom he called us to be. Free to know the truth with complete certainty. I’m not going to lie it’s hard to believe this truth. I struggle; we all struggle. But we can’t give up trying to believe because there are incredible things in store when we do.
The next time you’re tempted to think you’re insignificant, try to remember that you are worth dying for.
