“Goodbye” is defined as a word “used to express good wishes when parting or at the end of a conversation.” However, “goodbye” is more than just a word, it’s a giant pot of feelings. It can be awkward, incredibly heartbreaking, funny, and a little unreal. So what makes saying goodbye so difficult?
1. When the other person cries but you don’t. (Tear ducts, this would be a good time for you to kick in…)
2. That weird guilty feeling you get when your excited to leave, but simultaneously heartbroken that whoever you’re parting ways with can’t join you on your journey.
3. The last squeeze. It’s the best and worst embrace you’ll have. So tight and filled with love, but also full of pain because you know you won’t be seeing them for a while.
4. Looking back when you walk away (You will see them. They are not dying. Spare yourself the awful moment of watching them walk the opposite direction…I know you’ll still do it but hey, I tried to warn you).
5. About thirty minutes after you say goodbye and you’re all alone (tear ducts, thanks for finally making an appearance). There are few things worse than sitting alone in a t-shirt and underwear crying your eyes out.
6. The next day when the “Missing you already” Insta pops up on your newsfeed. Of course the moment was more than social media worthy, but here come those things again. What are they called? Emotions?
7. Reaching for your phone to ask the person to hangout and then putting it down because you realized that isn't an option anymore.
8. When you meet up with other people and all you can talk about is the person you just said “see you later” to.
9. Going to places alone that used to be “our place” feels like going back to high school: awkward, unnecessary and a little pubescent.
10. That split second of pure joy when you think the person you said bye to is where you are but really it’s just their doppelganger (what a tease).
Although saying goodbye (or everyone’s favorite alternate phrase “see you later”) can be tough, a beautiful reunion is just around the corner!
