We all know Taylor Swift has a history of singing about her exes. But with this new album release, fans are actively curious about which songs are written about which celebrities.
What makes this album stand apart however, is that the whole CD might be written about one person. This is very out of character for Taylor Swift, who typically writes about several different exes on one album. In 1989, she seems to constantly be referring one, specific relationship, and takes listeners on a journey from beginning to end. There are no specific names mentioned, unlike past albums she has released. Big steps for Miss Swift.
1989 is titled after the year she was born, however, the songs have a completely different meaning. Taylor has secret messages written in each song that helps listeners decode what the album is secretly about. Most of her lyrics are in all capital letters except for some random lower case ones, which spell out a message in each song. After decoding the album, this is the story we get:
We begin our story in New York (Welcome To New York). There once was a girl known by everyone and no one (Blank Space). Her heart belonged to someone who couldn’t stay (Style). They loved each other recklessly (Out of the Woods). They paid the price (All You Had To Do Was Stay). She danced to forget him (Shake It Off). He drove past her street each night (I Wish You Would). She made friends and enemies (Bad Blood). He only saw her in his dreams (Wildest Dreams). Then one day he came back (How You Get The Girl). Timing is a funny thing (This Love). And everyone was watching (I Know Places). She lost him, but she found herself and somehow that was everything (Clean).
After reading the secret message, we are all dying to know who this ENTIRE album is about. There are several reports claiming that 1989 is about Harry Styles. It does make sense. In a few of Taylor's songs, she talks about, "green eyes," which is Harry Styles's eye color. She also titled one of her songs Style.
"You got that James Dean daydream look in your eye,” Swift sings. If that doesn't describe Harry Styles then I don't know what does!
Overall, this is hands-down her most conservative album yet. It sounds like Taylor, but it is completely different from anything she has produced before. Many are saying that her album sounds like a mix of Lana Del Rey and good friend, Lorde. Either way, it's clear that Miss Swift has matured and is becoming quite the artist. In the upcoming weeks, we hope to see a response from Harry Styles about what he thinks about the album that is possibly all about their relationship.
