What I've Learned Being The Second Oldest Child Of 7

Sometimes I had to step into my mom's shoes.

What I've Learned Being The Second Oldest Child Of 7

Being a sister of six siblings has been a tough yet fruitful experience. I have matured and learned a lot by being the second oldest and taking over my mom’s shoes whenever she is feeling sick and tired. I matured much quicker than most of my friends that were the same age as me. I learned how to cook for my siblings whenever my parents were both working at an earlier age, which was fun but drained a lot of alone time.

I was seen as a second mother instead of an older sister which was stressful and annoying at times. Not only was I the big sister, or second mother, but also their mentor and tutor. I ensured that they understood what they were being taught in school and guided them in successfully completing their homework.

I wanted to go play with my own dolls but I had bigger responsibilities that interfered with my plans. I knew that going out to places meant taking the older siblings with me. I never truly got the chance to breathe my own air.

I always had one sibling run to me with tears, and I was always attentive. Having a huge family resulted in high bills and a humongous amount of money yet to be spent. Both of my parents would work long shifts to keep us fed and clothed. Therefore I spent long hours babysitting as a child. I took a lot of things from these days; I am now patient and won’t feel as new to motherhood in the long run.

When I finally turned fourteen I got my first job. I wanted to help my parents and so I did. I worked with both of my parents full-time during the summer. Mom was able to stop working nights to spend more time with the kids. I worked morning shifts with my dad, and then we drove to our second job at five o’clock.

I learned that nothing comes easy, and one must work to get what they desire. This entire journey made me realize the importance of a college degree. I don’t want my future family to struggle, and I definitely don't want to work two jobs full-time and rarely be able to spend time with my children.

If anything, I am beyond thankful and blessed to have been born in this family. I believe that I was destined to be a part of this family because this experience is what has built me to be who I am today. I can take anything that is thrown my way because I once could manage to be a student, a sister, and a second mother if needed to be.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
