One of the most fascinating things about New York City is the multitude of hidden gems found between the skyscrapers or along the water. They keep tourists and residents alike entertained and constantly exploring all that the greatest city on Earth has to offer. In late August, NYC's newest small-scale attraction opened in Battery Park. Welcome to the Seaglass Carousel.
The Seaglass Carousel is just that: a carousel built in a 2,575 square foot pavilion next to the Staten Island Ferry that features 30 massive fiberglass fish (10 different species, might I add) that instead of simply spinning around a traditional carousel pole, rotate 360 degrees while simultaneously spinning on panels on the floor and rising and falling in a wave-like pattern. While this may sound dizzying, the movements are so smooth and synchronized, riders get an underwater floating type experience.
The fish themselves are lit internally by color-changing LED lights as well as state-of-the-art audio. The pavilion itself is also equipped with "water effect" light projectors and audio pieces that immerse guests in a sensory under the sea experience. The ride is about three and a half minutes long, and the lights and movements of the attraction coordinate with the calming and playful ocean and island music.
While the ride itself sounds a tad childish, believe me when I say it is fun for any age. My friend and I, both 20-years-old, went on Opening Day and were probably some of the youngest people in the hour-long line. Nestled in the heart of the Financial District, the Seaglass Carousel attracted some of Wall Street's finest (we even made friends with the two middle-aged marketing directors in line in front of us.)
The Seaglass Carousel is $5 to ride, but all the money goes toward upkeep of the attraction and the Battery Conservancy. Battery Park was home to the first aquarium in NYC back in the 19th century, so architects and donors alike decided that an aquatic style carousel ride would honor the history of the aquarium and NYC culture in a whimsical and fun way.
The carousel is open year round and located at State Street and Water Street at the Battery Park Entrance. Check it out next time you're in the area!
