Screw Yer Roommate is coming up soon! You've probably heard people talking about it in passing, but I'm here to give you the full scoop, as well as some costume ideas.
Screw is not where you hook up with your roommate. Let's get that out of the way first. Screw is a way for Rice students to meet other students and hopefully make lasting friendships. How it works: you contact the roommate of the person that you want to set your roommate up with. Ie: Sally messages Bob, because Bob is Kyle's roommate and Sally wants her roommate Allison to go to Screw with Kyle. If Kyle isn't already going to Screw with someone, Bob confirms with Sally that Kyle will go with Allison. Sally then tells Allison that she found her a Screw date. Now comes the fun part!
Sally and Bob will choose the outfits for Allison and Kyle to wear. It's common courtesy to ask the respective people going to Screw if they're okay with the outfits, and then the pairs find the costumes. I recommend thrift stores, or something thrown together with cardboard and paint and string.
On the day of Screw, everyone participating meets in the RMC Grand Hall dressed up in their outfits, and people walk around looking for their respective date. This means you can't do something generic or common, because many people might use that costume as well. That'll make it hard to find the specific person in the Grand Hall.
Once they find each other, they go out to dinner with a specified group of people (sometimes in costume, sometimes not.) This group of people is something Sally and Bob need to communicate as well before Screw, so no one is scrambling to find a group to go eat with. People don't usually go eat solely with their Screw date, because it can be awkward eating with a person you only just met. After dinner, people usually go to parties (if they're so inclined) with their Screw dates. This is when it matters if Allison and Kyle are compatible or not. If Allison wants to go to the party, but Kyle doesn't, it won't be much fun for Allison.
Screw Yer Roommate is a great way for you to meet new people on campus, or just hang out with your friends. Screw doesn't have to be with someone you've never met, but the point of Screw is to meet someone new.
