Researchers have come to the conclusion that they have discovered another planet in our solar system.
Konstantin Batygin and Mike Brown, two CalTech scientists, say the new planet is about 10 times the mass of Earth and has an atmosphere of hydrogen and helium. Science magazine reports that the mysterious "Planet X" moves in a distant orbit beyond Neptune. The reason why it's here now? Scientists firmly believe it exists due to the unique configuration of six objects closest to the sun. They also believe that there's .0007 percent probability that the configuration is due to chance and are pretty certain it is a ninth planet and not just a random object in space.
Some scientists remain skeptical of this new discovery, but continue to examine it and will continue to observe this "ninth planet" to look for how it appeared and why it is there now.
"Although we were initially quite skeptical that this planet could exist, as we continued to investigate its orbit and what it would mean for the outer solar system, we become increasingly convinced that it is out there," Batygin said in a statement. "There is solid evidence that the solar system's planetary census is incomplete."
Batygin and Brown both collaborated and co-wrote a scholarly article on the subject in the Astronomical Journal this Wednesday. It is an exciting finding for Brown, due to the fact that he led scientists to believe that Pluto was a dwarf planet back in 2005. The diifference this time, he claims, is that this object is 5,000 times bigger than Pluto, thus the undeniable possibility that it will turn out to be a planet.
"All those people who are mad that Pluto is no longer a planet can be thrilled to know that there is a real planet out there still to be found," he said.
