When School Shootings Become The Norm, Something Has To Change

We shouldn't have to worry about children being safe in their schools.

Well, unfortunately, it’s happened again. There’s been another school shooting, this time in Maryland at Greater Mills High School. This most recent shooting makes 17 since the beginning of the year. Let that sink in. Since the beginning of 2018, there have been 17 school shootings.

Something has to be done, something has to change.

I’m not speaking from a political standpoint. I’m not a very political person, I never really have been. I’m speaking straight from my own thoughts. Something has to be done. Should it be harder to get a gun? Should there be stricter background checks? I don’t know. I don't have the answers. But I do know that school shootings should not be the norm.

When I saw the news that there had been yet another shooting do you know what went through my head? Really, another one? That shouldn't be one of the first thoughts that go through a person's head when the news of a school shooting breaks.

What has this world come to where shooting up a school, taking the lives of innocent children, has become seemingly a weekly thing. It’s ridiculous. It’s appalling. I’m sure there are children out there living in fear, afraid to go to school because they fear that their school might be next. Children shouldn’t have to worry about things like that. They shouldn't have to worry about maybe we’re next or where will I hide if that happens to us. It shouldn’t be this way, but unfortunately, it is.

It’s easy to point fingers at who’s fault it may or may not be. But I’m tired of the finger-pointing. I'm tired of people trying to shift the blame one way or another. ENOUGH. Instead of beating around the bush it’s time to set things straight and make a change.

For anybody out there that has been affected by any kind of shooting, I’m sorry. For anybody out there that has lost someone close to them due to a senseless act of violence, I’m sorry. To all the families who have lost children this year due to these tragedies, I'm sorry.

I can’t imagine the pain you’ve gone through and I hope I never have to. The time for change is now.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
