When I was around a junior in high school, leggings and yoga pants were becoming the height of popularity. Looking around in the hallways, you could see that the girls' general uniform was a Pink-brand hoodie or t-shirt, leggings or yoga pants, and Ugg boots. This was the go-to, comfortable outfit for a day of sitting in slightly chilly classrooms. Totally normal, until it wasn't anymore.
One day, we went to class expecting a day full of curriculum but were met with an announcement first. The female teachers, and only the female teachers, announced to the class that leggings and yoga pants were no longer acceptable clothes to wear in school and went against the dress code. Ignoring the fact that the handbook did not address anything about this, other than pants, skirts, and shorts were longer than fingertip length, blew everyone's minds. The girls were appalled that their most comfortable pair of pants were no longer school appropriate and the boys were thinking more along the lines of not being able to see the shape of a girl's booty through her leggings.
Of course, this little announcement went ignored by many girls as they wore their staple pair of leggings the next day and were promptly pulled aside as they stepped through the front doors to be told that their pants were not appropriate. The new rule was spread far and wide by administration since it was brought up again at the start of class by the female teachers as well as on the morning announcements.
Soon after leggings and yoga pants were banned, students found out why they were so suddenly outlawed. It was because leggings and yoga pants made the male teachers uncomfortable. The reaction to this news was outrage because the male teachers should not be looking at their students in an inappropriate way, conferring with other male teachers about it, or making it such a big issue that they felt they needed to bring it to administration.
Instead of having a discussion with the male teachers on how they should not be looking at their female students in such a way, the administration of the school decided to punish the girls for wearing pants that exposed little more than some ankle.
News of this did not take long to reach the parents, who promptly contacted the school administration to express their feelings on the matter. The parents' comments on the leggings issue as well as the professionalism of the male teachers became so overwhelming that the school backed off and tentatively allowed leggings and yoga pants back on campus without complaint.
Girls were no longer pulled aside for wearing leggings or yoga pants and the teachers and administration no longer dress coded them. This issue quickly became a thing of the past as the next scandal was at the forefront of everyone's minds but it was not forgotten, especially by those who wore their leggings with pride. As far as the students knew, nothing happened to the male teachers who were low-key perving on their female students and news of the legging/yoga pants issue never came back up.
