Following the death of University of Texas Alpha Delta Pi Elizabeth “Lizzie” Abrams in a car accident last month, her family has created a scholarship fund in her name, with the hope of furthering her values for years to come.
“Elizabeth's father set up the memorial scholarship fund as a way for Elizabeth's love of learning and compassion for others to live on,” said Texas ADPi President Helen Hansen.
Hansen said some members of the sorority have already donated to the fund, calling it “a wonderful way for us to remember Lizzie.”
Abrams was a business junior at UT who had been a part of ADPi since her freshman year.
Following her death, the sorority held a vigil to remember Abrams and posted to its social media accounts in remembrance of her.
In a Facebook post from the sorority about the fund, it said that Abrams’ father has been touched by the outpouring of support following his daughter’s death. “Her father has asked us to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support,” the post said. “He feels blessed to be surrounded by such wonderful friends and neighbors.”
Along with the fund, the post said that Abrams’ family is asking the public to donate to the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers.
The post said that the sorority has received many requests from people wishing to help Abrams’ family through this difficult time, and donating to the fund can be a way of doing that.
“We have received many questions asking what can be done to help Lizzie's father through the loss of his daughter,” the post said. “This scholarship fund will be used to support and further the collegiate education of students in the North Texas area. We hope that this will be an ongoing effort, there will be an annual fundraiser in Lizzie’s memory and all proceeds will be added to the scholarship each year.”
