As a college student there are times when I realize that I need to save money. However, what's a girl to do when 24 hour online sales pop up and Starbucks is calling her name? It is very easy to say that I will start saving money, but actually doing it is a whole other ball game. Below are five tips on how to save money in college.
1. Get a side hustle
In college, most students have to deal with classes, internships, clubs, and a social life. The idea of getting a job on the side may seem intimidating, but it will definitely be worth it when you see the extra dollars in your bank account. Work for your on campus dining services, or apply to be an R.A. At most schools they get free room and board, and an extra stipend such as reduced tuition or a paycheck.
2. Create a budget
While it may seem like a boring task, budgets help people save money every day. There are even free apps on your phone that budget for you like Mint. Mint lets you know how much you spend each week and suggests where you need to cut back. I have personally saved hundreds of dollars using Mint.
3. Eat on campus
If you live on campus like me, then chances are you have a pre paid meal plan. Instead of going off campus to eat, eat on campus, as you have already paid for that food. If you get sick of on campus food, have a night where you cook a meal with your friends. It gives you different food to eat without breaking the bank.
4. Go to class
A recent study showed that a regular college class costs roughly $120 per session. That means you are loosing out on $120 each time you decide to skip class. So, go to class! Not only will you get a better grade, but you will stop throwing money down the drain.
5. Hang out on campus
Let's face it, everyone likes to go out on the weekend. However, going to the club and partying with your friends can add up really fast. If you stay on campus chances are there are free things to do. Here at Eastern, every Friday night is free movie night where the student center shows a new release. There are also basketball and volleyball courts, so if you look around you can find fun things to do for free.
In conclusion, saving money is never easy. But with a little bit of patience and a pinch of compromising, you will soon be raking in that dough!
