Savannah, Georgia. Spring Break destination. Honeymoon destination. Birthday destination. You name it. It's a great place for someone, like me, who loves to explore around and get a fill for places, like this one. Savannah, Georgia, is not only home to a large historic district and vibrant community of tourists; it is full of class.
Savannah was founded by General James Oglethorpe, and he created four rules:
1). No Slavery
Although the ban was lifted in 1750, I applaud Oglethorpe for creating a society in which we live in today before the civil war.
2). No Catholics
Due to England and Spain having commercial disputes, Catholics were banned from moving to Savannah. Sometimes I think Oglethorpe wasn't a big fan of the religious crowd either.
3). No Hard Liquor
The only beverages a resident could drink would be beer and wine.
4). No Attorneys
Oglethorpe couldn't trust that lawyers would do their jobs correctly. (Ironically, there are attorney offices located at almost every block).
Savannah also has a very populous Jewish community. They began locating in Savannah from London in the summer of 1733 and created the oldest synagogue in the south known as the Congregation Mickve Israel.
I think to myself that Savannah is the "New Orleans of the East Coast". Although not exactly touching the Atlantic Ocean, it is pretty close. Both Savannah and New Orleans can be compared and contrasted in many different ways, to name a few. Savannah is cleaner. Literally. While both are very proud of what they have, Savannah seems to show it in a different way. Walking ghost tours, horse carriages, trolleys, even tours in a hearse! The world-famous Leopold's Ice Cream parlor is there, and let's not forget Paula Deen's Lady & Sons restaurant!
River Street in Savannah is the equivalent to Bourbon Street in New Orleans (mostly!). Both have more tourist shops than you could imagine. River Street has more restaurants. Bourbon Street has more bars with intersecting streets offering multiple restaurants. River Street is located right on the Savannah River, whereas Bourbon Street is in the heart of New Orleans. Both cities are immensely similar, because the culture smacks you in the face as soon as you drive or walk in the areas.
If you're looking for other places to relax on vacation, get away on your honeymoon, or just another place to visit on a road trip, give Savannah, Georgia, a try. The best time to go would be every other season but summer if that is an option. It is intoxicatingly beautiful.
