UFC fans, sports martial arts veterans, and girls everywhere have started the "Sage Northcutt Obsession."
Sage Northcutt is predicted to be the "next big thing" for the UFC world after his successful debut in the octagon last week, October 3, at UFC's 192. Northcutt fought for only 57 seconds before he won his fight by TKO. 57 seconds, people! This is his UFC debut, he's 19 years old, and he's clearly going places. Check out the highlights from his fight here:
Did you see those flips? Clearly he has some roots other than the UFC. And those roots would be found in sports martial arts. Sage is a veteran of the SMA competition world, competing both in fighting and forms divisions since he was young kid.
The average person doesn't really know what SMA entails, all they might picture is a scene from The Karate Kid. And for this reason, the SMA world practically goes insane and puts all their support behind anyone who can "make it" and represent for the little people. If you're from the SMA world, like me, you may remember the whole Taylor Lautner phenomenon post-Twilight debut and how everyone kept saying "Oh yeah I know him! We used to compete against each other."
Ok guys...ok. I'm sure you're BFF's.
Others in this boat that you might recognize are Raymond Daniels, Steve Terada, Rudy Reynon, and Caitlin Dechelle. Sage has now joined this elite crew.
The overwhelming support from the SMA community is astounding for these former (and somewhat still active) competitors. People who aren't even old enough to remember the prime-time of Sage are jumping on the bandwagon. And of course this is not something to frown at, it's always great when someone can actually get special recognition outside of our world, since our sport is often significantly underrated--for a few reasons that I will not get into now.
Essentially, almost everyone in the SMA world is talking about Sage like proud moms.
There's always this underlying dream for sport martial artists, even if they don't admit they have it. That dream would be to "make it big" somewhere outside of the realm of martial arts, wether it be in movies, stunt work, acting, performing at the VMA's, or basically anything that will give them some kind of significant recognition. Without scholarships for college or an olympic level, many martial artists drop out of the sport to pursue something more "profitable" or "beneficial."
However, the cream of the crop have actually been able to persevere and make their dream a reality. And this is exactly why they are so highly praised, they keep that hope alive for everyone. Maybe one day they too can be successful outside of SMA. Because although we love our sport, sometimes we want more.
Outside of the realm of SMA, people (girls) are going crazy on account of his undoubtedly good looks and physique, just check his Instagram comments. Sage has blown up on the internet and more specifically social media since his fight, and the girls are going crazy... and well who could blame them?
Sage is definitely good enough for Disney star, Bella Thorne. #tbt
But sorry folks, according to his Instagram, @supersagenorthcutt, looks like he's spoken for.
Sage and his sister Colby were on my team, Full Circle, for some time before the team was put on halt. I, personally, don't remember talking to Sage/running into him at tournaments, but I did talk to his sister, Colby, another great woman fighter making strides in professional kickboxing. Knowing that these two individuals are extremely hard workers, I can say that if anyone deserves special recognition for their athletic achievements, it's definitely these two.
Just try and remember me when you both make it in the big leagues, I wouldn't mind being your personal media journalist.
Another last shoutout to Sage for bringing hope to the little people and giving the sport some much needed recognition! I think I speak for everyone in the SMA world when I say that we wish you the best of luck and will support you as much as possible.
