Safe In My Bed

It is easy to forget what is happening around the world.

It's getting closer.

I can see it.

A bomb.

I am crouched down on the floor surrounded by some of my friends.

I hear gun rapid gun shots.

Fear runs through my body.

A fear I have never known before.

Although the bomb is quickly approaching it seems to be in slow-motion time,

I think of my family and when was the last time I said I loved them.

And just then,

it all goes black.

I wake up.

Safe in my bed.

It was just a dream, a dream of some sort of war.

But this dream I had a few weeks ago is just a nightmare for me and reality for many.

Right now this is what people in Syria and Middle Eastern countries wake up to every morning. Fear and not knowing what will happen next. Not knowing when the next air strike will occur, or the next time they will see their loved ones, or if their home will be destroyed. They don't know if the next time they will be at an airport if their will be a suicide bomber, or next time they are at a shopping mart it will be the next scene of a tragedy.

This is their reality, let that sink in.

I recently saw a video done by Save The Children, showing what is happening in Syria right now and pressing the message of just because it isn't happening here doesn't mean it isn't actually happening. The video makes my heart break and makes me wish I could instantly change the world.

But it makes sense that they would want to spread that message. To say America or any country for that matter is perfect right now would be a lie, but to say us in specific have it pretty good wouldn't be far from the truth. I think we all forget sometimes that just because something isn't happening here in our homeland doesn't mean it really isn't occurring.

Believe me I know there is so much controversy going on currently from the election to police brutality and we shouldn't lose sight of any of that, but I think for a few minutes everyday every American should wake up and feel privileged and thankful. Thankful that we can wake up and go out and do whatever we want. Not having to worry about a war going on outside our home, or being mutilated because you believe in change. We should be proud we live in a country where if we are upset with our government we are allowed and encouraged to make a difference and speak our voice.

Believe in change and love. Pray for Syria. Pray for the world. And never give up hope.

Next time you're feeling ungrateful or upset with your life, just think, people in Syria and countries around the world wake up to war and chaos, and you wake up safe in your bed.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
