The start of a new school year at WSU means another week of hitting on dudes. That's right, it’s Fraternity rush, and you have to bring your “A game” to socialize with a group of guys.
It’s just like hitting on girls; you get their numbers, go on dates with them (rush events), and hopefully get a kiss goodnight (bid card).
DO's
- Ignore campus stereotypes - Every Fraternity and Sorority has its pros and cons. Every year, statuses change. Just because the chapter isn’t considered a "top house" on campus, doesn’t mean you can’t make it one. If you like the guys in a house, stick with them!
- Understand why you are rushing - Whether it's to build your resume, brotherhood or philanthropy, you need to figure out what you want before you check out the chapters. This way, you can shape the conversations around what you are looking for out of a Fraternity.
- Have confidence - The key to Fraternity rush is not being afraid to talk to anyone. The more friends you make, the more Fraternities you will get bids from. Make everyone your best friend, especially your Rho Chi. He can’t tell you what house he is in, but he can put in a good word for you if he likes you.
- Be yourself- Don’t try to be someone you're not, it will just come back to bite you in the a**. Be chill and have fun. Remember, guys in a Fraternity deal with new people all the time, so they can read your personality pretty fast. If you don’t fit into one, don’t get down on yourself because every house is different. Be patient and you'll find the perfect one.
- Meet the Rush Chair- If you really want to join a specific chapter, make sure the rush chair remembers you. Go meet him and make a good first impression!
- Listen to your Rho Chi- He has been trained for this. His advice is valid - take it and run with it. This guy is a great resource.
- Ask a lot
of questions- Everyone loves talking about their chapter. Here are some to
get you started.
- What their recent grades were.
- How many guys are in the house.
- How much it costs to live in the house.
- Ask about their philanthropy.
- What their best memory of the Fraternity is.
- Ask them for tips on rushing.
DONT's
- Wear cargo shorts - Just don’t do it.
- Limit yourself to one Fraternity at the beginning - As you go along Formal rush, your opinion on each Fraternity will change. Be sure to accept all options.
- Get down because the girls aren’t talking to you- If you didn’t already know, girls aren’t allowed to talk to boys during Sorority recruitment. If you see a big group of hot girls walk by (which you will), all you can do is admire from afar.
