Recently, the internet has gone viral with the release of Ryan Adams full album cover of Taylor Swift's 1989. A new acoustic take, Adam's album revamped Taylor's 1989 into his own style. As a long-time Swift fan, I am in love with Adam's creative and unique style. The alternative vibe brings me back to a better time when music wasn't all about how "the bass drop killed us," or how much they talked about sex, drugs, and booze. It's the perfect album to jam out to while doing homework, or during relaxation time.
The music world is losing it's mind, especially Taylor Swift. Swift is thrilled about the cover album Adams did, but the real question is what drove him to make this cover album, and furthermore, cover the whole album?
After conducting some research and looking at different interviews Adams has had in the recent few weeks, I've come to the conclusion that Adams is truly inspired by Swift's music. He found something more in her music, something deeper that if he recorded it on his own, it would hit an even bigger demographic. Adams' first attempt to cover the album was done on a 4 track cassette recorder; but in a tragic twist of events, the cassette broke. He didn't give up there, though. He went back and this time, got a full studio set up. Swift was ecstatic about Adams putting out a cover to her album, even Lana del Ray commented saying "It's Taylor Swift like you never imagined".
These two different albums arguably cater to completely different audiences: the indie/acoustic/alternative lover would most likely enjoy Adam's cover, while the pop lover would go gaga over Swift's album. Nonetheless, Taylor Swift fans are falling more in love with the cover album, and reviewers cant get enough. Although it has been made clear that the two albums aren't a competitive idea, both artists whole-heartedly support each other in their endeavors.
Adams is inspired by Swift, her presence on stage and off. In an interview conducted by Rolling Stone, Adams raves that, "The undeniable force of her personality comes through in her music." He goes on to talk about her power and her influence, and how he can sense it in virtually every situation. He brought his own flare, with his personal endeavors, he revolutionized the sound that came off of Swift's original work.
So far, no tour appearances have been made, but just think about these two on stage together, and if you haven't heard the music, believe me when I say this, you're missing out!
