I set out to make a list of songs produced, written and/or sung by Russian musicians that would be fun and interesting to these not well familiar with the Russian culture.
All of the songs are in English!
1. Pompeya - "90"
Pompeya is a modern indie pop and rock band.
2. t.A.T.u. - "All the Things She Said"
Probably their only song that deserves to be listened to (not really). At the same time this is the most popular song on this list and t.A.T.u. is the most popular Russian band outside of Russia.
3. Banana bomb - "Dance"
A small and not well known band started by Stas Davydov -- the Russian Ray William Johnson of viral video commenting fame (5,256,600 subs on Davydov's main channel on YouTube).
4. Brazzaville - "Star Called Sun"
Yes, this is not a Russian band. But it does sing a translation of one of the most popular Russian songs ever.
Here is the original song for these really into Russian music.
5. Lenin Was a Zombie - "Your Cat Is Dead!"
This is the weirdest band on this list (also the least popular and the one with the worst English). It's still pretty entertaining.
6. Vasya Oblomov - "Magadan"
A very depressing translation of a pretty depressing song. Vasya Oblomov is a Russian activist for the political opposition, singer and songwriter.
7. Red Elvises - "Bacon"
This is how most people probably imagine Russian bands look.
8. Mumiy Troll - "Love Contraband"
Mumiy Troll is a very popular Russian rock group that sometimes sings in English.
9. Gorky Park - "Bang"
The first Russian band to be featured on MTV. Also a band that collaborated with Bon Jovi (true).
10. Everything is Made in China - "Moving Fragments"
As "indie" as it gets.
11. Motorama - "Alps"
A modern post-punk Russian group.
12. Therr Maitz - "Doctor"
Just listen.
13. Автограф - "Реквием"
As a bonus this is a song in Russian. It is pays homage to John Lennon. I included it because it can be admired even without its lyrics -- for the music for which the band was known.
