As a new member of my fraternity this year, I am just now seeing the other side of the curtain and experiencing how much work and planning goes into rushing. When I was a freshman in college, it was just going around and meeting new people and hanging out to see which house I fit in best with. You are going to rush events, interacting with all these new people and being invited you over to their house to hang out. As a freshman, there is just all so much to do and see with many people to meet.
Being on the other side of the rushing process as a sophomore and as a new member is a gives whole new perspective. There is a lot of planning and talking about what the rush events should be and how to do them. Another way people try and prepare for rushing is going on Facebook and looking up the incoming freshman, to get an idea of who they want to focus on for rushing. Members also try and join positions like unit buddy and Camp Compass to get to meet these freshman early on before anyone else really can, while remaining Greek neutral though. It helps to create an early relationship with freshman and make them familiar and comfortable with those position holders, in hopes that they will be able to get the freshman over to their respective houses.
Now, being a member of my fraternity and being able to see how much planning really goes into rushing, it makes me have a lot more respect for it, and all the work that goes into getting freshman to join a house. It was a huge surprise to see how much everyone works together to get new members to come over and finding the right people to join the house.
