Rupi Kaur never misses the ball when she puts pen to paper. I would honestly read this woman's grocery lists. Anytime I need to do some soul searching, I pick up my well worn copy of Milk and Honey. This week one of her poems really hit home for me.
I had to read this poem several times because every single word was so real and true. I think that too often, we don't give people enough praise, and when we do we focus on the least important aspects of people.
When I come to someone's mind, I would rather them think that I'm kind or thoughtful or hard-working or selfless. Honestly, I would rather someone call me anything other than just "pretty". Someone's appearance speaks nothing to the person they are. Although it's nice to feel beautiful and be reminded of it every once and a while, it is much more thoughtful when someone comments on how much they love your personality. Like how you lower your voice when you cuss in public because you think it's rude. Or how you stay up insanely late to study for a test because you care so much about your grade. Or the fact that you refuse to leave a stray dog alone on the street because you love animals with every once of your being. Or the way your voice changes when you talk about your favorite book.
At the end of the day, the things that make you "you" are what matters the most, and not that your hair was perfectly curled last Thursday.
