In a generation where beliefs are changing, and certain lifestyles that were once predominantly frowned upon are becoming more widely accepted, it is important that there are opinion leaders who stand by these changes. Who would have thought that a most powerful leader would be only 14 years old?
The star of the Disney Channel’s hit series "Girl Meets World," Rowan Blanchard, took to Twitter this week to open up about her sexuality. She wrote, “In my life, I only ever liked boys; however, I personally don't wanna label myself as straight gay or whateva, so I am not gonna give myself labels to stick with. Just existing :).”
Rowan also took the time to answer those fans who had some questions for her after her open and honest words. Most people were very supportive of the young actress and, in fact, even admired her for her courage. But, as expected, there were many people who used the social platform to express their distaste for Rowan’s self-identification as queer. Still, she was surprised by the negative reaction she received from those who were less than supportive of her.
The starlet intends to take more action for the LGBTQ community. When one fan tweeted, “BisexualRileyMatthews2k16,” Rowan expressed her great interest in possibly portraying this in her character on the series. This is not the first time that Blanchard has come forth with her strong beliefs on a tender topic. Early last fall, she spoke up about white versus black feminism, and how the races experience sexism and inequality differently. The essay received 97,000 likes on Instagram.
By speaking her mind, Rowan has proved that you are truly never too young to speak up about what you believe in. She has been a great role model for teens everywhere, and recently, for those who may be dealing with the internal struggle of coming out. Her openness and willingness to talk about a topic that can often be considered taboo could be enough for others to feel they too can be true to who they are.
Rowan was named in Time Magazine as one of the most influential teens of 2015. In conjunction with her bold statements on her social media accounts, Rowan spoke at the United Nations Women’s annual summit last June. There, she spoke about gender inequality and its effects on youth.
Atop her many achievements, the young activist is an ambassador for the #TeamHeforShe feminist campaign. Her dream is to attend the Columbia School of Journalism.
Rowan Blanchard is contributing to the push this society needs toward all levels of equality.
