An Open Letter To My College Roommates

Thank you for being more than roommates

An Open Letter To My College Roommates
Haleigh Contino

I don’t really remember life without them.

I don’t remember not sharing clothes.

I don’t remember a time before the dorm room dance parties.

I don’t remember not braiding one another’s hair or stealing Wheat Thins from a box that didn’t belong to me.

To put it plainly, I’m blessed.

No, like, really blessed.

We’ve seen each other cry and we’ve fought over cleaning duties.

We’ve gone to sporting events for free shirts and free shirts alone.

We’ve studied so late that we couldn’t see straight.

We have inside jokes that no one else would think are funny.

We subbed in as real sisters on Sibs Weekend.

We’ve played in the snow after midnight and we’ve eaten burnt popcorn.

We say “love you” every time we say goodbye for class.

We are sisters and friends and sometimes even moms to each other.

We find excitement in buying gifts for one another because it means we might be able to steal it back when we’re in desperate need of a cute outfit.

We wipe tears and give hugs whenever necessary.

Like I said, I’m blessed.

I’d heard the "crazy college roommate" horror stories before I got here, but I never had to live my own.

Yeah, my roommates are crazy, but they’re my crazy best friends.

And I hope they are for a long, long time.

We’ll keep doing each other’s makeup and fighting over who left the empty pop can on the coffee table.

All I hope for the three of us is that we bicker and laugh and stay friends forever.

There isn’t a doubt in my mind that God has placed us in one another’s lives for a reason.

We talk about who we’ll be in 20 years, and how we'll return to school with our Bobcat husbands and Bobkitten kids.

Our kids will be friends and maybe we’ll even have casual dinner parties together on Friday nights.

I really, really want that.

To my friends/sisters/roommates, thank you.

Thank you for holding me when I cry and for reassuring me when I worry.

Thank you for listening to me and for laughing at my jokes even when they aren’t the least bit funny.

Thank you for showing me what it means to be a friend.

Friends for life,

Hal

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
