A Roommate Success Story

Yes, they exist.

A Roommate Success Story

Often, you hear all the horror stories from people that are in college now, or once were in college, about the awful encounters they had with their roommates.

“Oh, the other day my roommate did _____”

“When I was in college, my roommate and I fought constantly”

I’m sure you’ve heard and read about all of the possible things that could go horribly. Thankfully, I don’t have any of those stories.

I signed up for the “random roommate assignment” that my school did for students who didn’t have a roommate, and was sent my papers with my roommate’s name and number on it in the summer before moving in. I was worried that we wouldn’t get along because I have weird sleep schedules, love to listen to (random) music all of the time, and can’t fall asleep if someone is snoring in the same room as me.

We texted off and on the rest of the summer about who was bringing the microwave and who was bringing a fridge and got to know each other some, and then once we both got to school, we became close friends quickly.

We LOVE the same kind of music!

We both are HUGE Disney fans and know all songs by heart and talk 24/7 about Disney-related topics. When we aren’t listening to Disney, we have found some new, awesome Jesus music and we jam and worship together before class and it is AWESOME. It’s rare and awesome that roommates share the same love for random music tastes. We also share a love of listening to Christmas music 24/7/365. Most other humans are annoyed by this but I'm so glad she's not.

We have learned to communicate telepathically.

We have a lot of the same interest so we are often in meetings together, involved in the same activities, or eating meals together AND we live in the same room, so we are around each other ALL of the time. We have learned how the other thinks and the things they would most likely say in that situation. We’re at the point where if we make eye contact, we know exactly what the other person is thinking and we just laugh. Other people have started to get freaked out by this.

Finals week brings out emotions and heart-to-hearts.

Enough said. We got 10x closer over first semester finals simply because we were up and sleep deprived together at 3 am every day.

We both love Jesus!!

This was something I was so worried about because it is a huge part of my life but thankfully He knew what He was doing when He placed us together. We share devotions and awesome ways that we’ve seen God working in our lives and it is so encouraging. (We also occasionally do four-way devotions with our boyfriends that we probably love way more than they do.)

We are friends with mostly the same people.

And we have met new people through each other!! We hang out with the same group of people even though we have different majors. It’s super awesome cause no matter what other friends come or go, we will still be friends.

We both started a new chapter of life together.

We started out on the same page-clueless. We had no idea what we were doing, but we started out together. We have been through finals week, 1 am ER visits, sleepless nights, family events, more Buffalo Wild Wings trips than I can count, tests, heart to hearts, and more. We were put on the starting line together and both just took off, having no idea where we were going. But, I am so glad we were put beside each other.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
