My roommate Kristen and I live in room 576 while our boyfriend, Kyle lives one flight or 20 averaged sized steps away from us in room 476. And thanks to Plato and Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the kind of love that Kristen, Kyle and I share can be defined as strictly platonic.
Although our relationship lacks sexual desire, our trio shares a bond that is comparable to many long term relationships. “They” always say that you meet your lifelong friends in college. Luckily for me, I found them on move in day and we have been inseparable since then.
1. We have daily dinner dates.
Literally nothing is better than receiving a text in our group chat that says, “Anyone wanna go to the Union?” It is like music to my ears.
2. We road trip together.
Last week we road tripped 13 hours to see our favorite musician preform in San Marcos, Texas. While we were down there we met the band, got matching ink and made many unforgettable memories.True bonds were formed in that city.
3. We share stories from our hometown until three in the morning.
Mostly we talk about our insane ex’s and crazy party mishaps because those stories will never get old.
4. We make time for each other.
“I’m on my way” is one of the most commonly delivered and received texts on our phones. When you are so far away from home nothing is more important than having a friend that is there for you at any moment of the day.
5. We cook together.
Baked potato soup really does taste better out of a paper bowl at two in the morning.
6. We go out together.
It is like a scene in a movie when I spot one of them from the other side of the room. We lock eyes and head towards each other to embrace in a hug on the middle of the dance floor. From there we usually take a sip from whatever the other person is drinking and harmoniously sing a verse from the song that is currently playing.
7. We pick on each other.
This is important. Life cannot be taken seriously at 19 years old. It is impossible to have fun and enjoy yourself if you don’t lighten up and let yourself be vulnerable.
8. We make promises.
Whether we promise to wait for one another to go to the Union or we promise to have each other’s back when life gets tough, we hold ourselves to those promises and never let the other person down.
Long live room 576 and 476.
