The Roomie Day Trip

Planning a last-minute trip is far from easy, but very worth it.

At the beginning of the year, my roommate and I decided we would take a trip off campus together before the end of the year. Well, before we knew it, it was the weekend before spring break and we had yet to go on an adventure.

On Thursday night, we decided to plan a trip to Boston for Saturday. We thought it would be the perfect time to take a roomie trip! Our planning did not go as quickly as we both expected, and the details were not established until Friday.

While Doghead, Colby’s annual Saint Patrick’s Day tradition, took place the same weekend, we decided this would be the best time for us to go before break and the end of the year. That meant we had to get as much sleep as we could, missing the Doghead tradition of watching the sunrise from the steps of Miller on Saturday morning. We decided it was worth it, though.

Believe it or not, we managed to organize a day trip to Boston and make it back to Colby before the wee hours of Sunday morning! Below is the breakdown of our trip:

6:30 a.m.: Wake Up Time. We got ready to head out the door despite not eating breakfast.

7:30 a.m.: Taxi Ride. We arranged for a taxi to drive us from Waterville to Augusta.

8:15 a.m.: Bus Ride. The taxi arrived in Augusta just in time for us to hop on the bus to Boston.

11:35 a.m.: Arrival in Boston. Finally, our time in Boston began! My roommate suggested we head to Boston’s Chinatown to look around and have lunch.

12:30 p.m.: Dim Sum. I had my first taste of Dim Sum. My roommate insisted I try shrimp dumplings, her favorite food.

1:30 p.m.: Navigating the T. We spent way too long trying to interpret the city maps and finding the right train to take. Eventually, we found our way to Newbury Street.

2:00-4:00 p.m.: Newbury Street. Is there anything that isn’t on Newbury Street? We roomies spent a good few hours going up and down the streets shopping, and ended the day with Georgetown Cupcakes! After seeing the show on Netflix and hearing all the positive reviews, I put Geogetown Cupcakes at the top of my list of best cupcakes. We each ordered a Saint Patty’s day cupcake (in honor of Doghead) and I also bought a salted caramel flavored one. Our experience can be summed up in one word: delicious!

4:30-5:30 p.m.: More Shopping. The Prudential Center and Copley Place were our biggest hits.

6:00-6:30 p.m.: Chipotle. My roommate had never tried Chipotle before, so it was now my turn to give her a taste of America’s Chipotle craze. There are, sadly, no Chipotle restaurants in Waterville. I ordered my typical rice bowl and ate contentedly while we people-watched from the restaurant window.

7:15 p.m.: Bus Ride. Unfortunately, our time in Boston had come to an end and it was time to head back to Maine. We boarded the bus just in time and before we knew it, we were on our way back to campus!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
