Seven Rom-Coms to Watch Over Thanksgiving Break
Valley

It was only a couple of days ago that I found myself watching 13 going on 30 for the millionth time. Yet while this was not my first time watching this classic romantic comedy, my friend (who was sitting next to me) had never even heard of the movie before. It was then that I realized that many of my friends had never seen many of the most heartwarming movies in the whole world. How can a human being say they are complete, if they have not seen: Lily Collins, Jennifer Lopez, Sandra Echeverria, or Alicia Silverstone (to name some) fall in, and navigate the sticky world of love? Therefore, instead of watching good old Charlie Brown or classic Christmas movies during this Thanksgiving break you should pop your popcorn and turn on Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime to watch the following romantic comedies:

Cambio De Ruta

Starts Sandra Echeverria as a young tour guide named Nicté. She works for a small company that gives tours of the Mayan Rivera. Everything is going fine until the company she worked for is bought by a cold big corporation that does not care about the natural beauty of the environment that Nitcé not only calls her workplace, but home. It is then that she decides to start from scratch and create her own tourist company, enlisting the help of her best friend, to win the national Best Tour Guide Prize. Along the way she finds love. A love that is complicated when she realizes that the man she is falling in love with is the son of the owner of the company that bought her old workplace and whom she is running against for the coveted prize of Best Tour Guide in Mexico. This movie is also filmed in some of the most beautiful locations in Mexico.

Love, Rosie

Stars Lily Collins as a young girl names Rosie, who thinks she has her life figured out. She will leave for Boston with her best friend Alex (Sam Claflin) to study at Boston College where she will receive the education necessary to own her own hotel. Unfortunately, eighteen-year-old Rosie is not aware of how life works. Her life plans become de-railed when she becomes a teen mom. Her life moves on unexpectedly, but she tries to keep her friendship alive with Alex. Through they years they each realize the love they have for one another, but it seems that they can never find the right timing. The movie is not only a beautiful story of a friendship blossoming into a romance, but how chasing your dreams is never a waste of time, no matter how much times it takes to accomplish them.

Me Late Chocolate

Follows the life of Monica (Karla Souza) whose fiancé dies in an accident on a date they were on. In the aftermath of his death she enrolls in a culinary school making her thesis: “making a chocolate that can get rid of heartaches.” During this time, she goes on many dates. The issue is never the guys, but her. She just can’t stop seeing her dead fiancé. It is only when she meets her culinary instructor that things seem to be turning from bleak to hopeful. This movie is great and if you are a fan of Laurel Castillo from How to Get Away with Murder than you’ll love Karla’s portal of Monica.

Clueless

If you haven’t watched this classic rom-com then you, my dear, are incomplete. Clueless follows Cher (Alicia Silverstone) a young superficial, popular, Beverly Hills girl. A self-proclaimed matchmaker, Cher begins to question how come she can’t find someone for herself. Throughout the movie she sets her eyes on a classmate, not realizing that her true love is closer than she thinks and right under her nose. Clueless is a story of maturity, self-discovery, and of course love.

13 going on 30

Another classic, this movie is centered around Jenna Rink (Jennifer Garner) a thirteen-year-old girl, as the title would suggest, and the weird turn of events that she finds herself in when a birthday wish comes true. Jenna soon realizes that being “thirty, flirty, and thriving” isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Through her adventures in New York as a thirty-year-old, Jenna gets to see the outcome of her life if everything she had ever wanted in junior high came true. Is it the life she envisioned? Is it the life she wants? Only she can answer that.

Maid in Manhattan

Marisa Ventura (Jennifer Lopez) is a single mother working as a maid in a high-end hotel in Manhattan. In an unexpected turn of events she falls victim to the classic case of mistaken identity when she meets Mr. Christopher Marshall (Ralph Fiennes). Marisa and Christopher hit it off, but it is not long before Marisa’s identity as a maid is revealed. It is then that they question the probability of their relationship working. The movie is beautiful and it speaks to class differences and how love can conquer all.

Stuck in Love

Ben Borgnes (Greg K) is a novelist that can’t seem to get over his ex-wife (Jennifer Connelly), who left him for a younger man. The movie also follows the lives of his two children Rusty (Nat Wolfe) and Sam (Lily Collins) as they navigate the complexities of love. It is a funny, awkward and heartwarming movie that looks at the lives of a family and how they deal with the issues of love and kinship. The bigger issue at hand being, what does family mean?

10 Year Plan

Myles and Brody have been best friends forever. Myles is the type of person who believes in the idea of Mr. Right while Brody likes to have fun and doesn’t want nor need to be with someone in a committed relationship. During a night, the two make a pact that if Myles is still single in ten years then Brody will hunker down with Myles. Well almost ten years later Myles is still single and with two months before the deadline both friends do the impossible to find Mr. Right. Throughout this journey it becomes clear for the watcher how much these two mean to each other, but if only they could see that sooner then maybe Myles would not be leaving to take a job across the country because he thinks he has nothing left for him at home and he doesn’t want his friend to do something he doesn’t want to do.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
