Something you need to know, even if no one has told you before, is that you're someone's role model. Stereotypically, you can be a role model if you're an older sibling,a parent, a coach, a teacher, or by just guiding others through tough decisions. What people don't tell you is that even if you don't meet 'said' positions, you are still someone's role model. A role model is someone that a person wants to mirror in order to achieve the same level of greatness. Even if that greatness was winning the third grade spelling bee, or shaking off your nerves before a big performance, or standing up to a bully; there is at least one person who remembers and admires you for it. That's the tough part - being able to live up to your own legacy. I'm here to tell you that although it might be overwhelming at times, you have what it takes to be a role model. A role model doesn't have to do everything perfectly, they just have to be true, and honest with themselves about their actions. Role models don't have to always succeed in everything they do. Often, eyes are more glued to you during tough times- people look up to you as a road map on what to do when struggling. If you don't feel adequate enough to be a role model, change up your life and conduct yourself properly in order to fill that role.Start by setting and example of hard work, respect, and perseverance.
I believe that your subconscious picks a role model before you do. You see who you want to look like, act like, and be treated like- and then you slowly try to actually become them. Sometimes you pick a role model that some may not approve of- but if you can relate them, or they share a similar past as you , than it's worth the ride. The hardest part about growing up Is finding yourself and figuring out what you want to do. So don't try to rush things or switch up on yourself. To be yourself is the best way to help others find themselves. Leading through example is the most efficient way to impact lives. People want to see a kid from their neighborhood become a doctor, a lawyer, a teacher, an aide, an officer- pretty much just someone who made it. Because if they can make it , so can I .
Role models don't always have to be people you know. They can be celebrities , historical figures or even fictional characters. Sometimes your role model doesn't have to be older than you, they just have to be someone you aspire to be like. There are plenty of younger people who have used their resources wiser than I have, and have earned a spot of admiration in my life. While at times we feel that we are not enough to fill the role we were handed, we must remember that we have to continue in our path and not defer. Take your steps carefully , because there is always someone following.
