Tired of wasting your money on films that drag on and leave you in the theater for almost three hours? Tired of watching a movie and wondering why they left so many questions unanswered? "Nerve" just may be the boost of energy you need to liven up your movie watchers resume.
It centers around an eighteen year old girl named Vee (played by Emma Roberts), who has not a single ounce of courage in her body. That is until her best friend warps her into the fictional social media phenomenon: Nerve. It's basically like a long-running game of 'truth or dare' mixed with Snapchat, but choosing the truth will cause consequences.
Teens can choose to be a "player" or "watcher." Watchers do more than just sit at home and watch the players. They not only choose the dares, but they reward players for completing them. As the game progresses dares go from harmless fun and small amounts of cash to incredibly frightening coming with small fortunes. Soon after she decides to play, Vee meets Ian (played by Dave Franco), a mysterious guy with a chest of secrets. Ultimately, Vee and Ian are driven to fight to the finish, but that does not mean it will come easily.
Emma Roberts captured a "Plain Jane" character gone wild well. Dave Franco's sly grin captures the female audience as always with his subtle charm. Their chemistry onscreen gave us just what we were looking for in a budding teen romance. Supporting actor Miles Heizer's quirky demeanor shined with his comedic relief scenes in the movie. Rapper turned actor, Machine Gun Kelly played the role of the ultimate daredevil you just loved to hate. There was also a surprise appearance from a former "Orange is the New Black" favorite that excited the audience. The cast as as whole fit the bill perfectly for the film.
I enjoyed this movie for it's fast-pace, action-packed and contrast of light vibrancy to dark grittiness. That hour and thirty-six minutes was worthy every penny. I recommend this movie to young adults because of the topic and strong connection to social media. It may lead to an even bigger issue and epidemic itself. The movie provides and interesting look as to where social media could lead in the near future. If you need an escape from your daily summer routine, check out "Nerve" with a group of your friends if you dare.
