A crowd of students, family, and friends was constantly moving through the Association of Former Students from 12:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Laughter, joy, and community filled the atmosphere. The source was clear - they were celebrating Ring Day.
The Aggie Ring has been an integral part of Texas A&M University's rich history and tradition from the very beginning. Its unique symbolism characterizes the core values of Texas A&M. It represents Aggie spirit and the unshakable bond shared within the Aggie family. This eye-catching piece of gold is indeed, shiny. However receiving an Aggie ring is more than just a new piece of jewelry; it marks an important chapter of a story in the life of every student who receives one.
Aggie rings were distributed to over 3,500 Texas A&M students on September 19, 2014.
Have you ever wondered what the different designs covering the Aggie ring mean? They are what give this tradition depth and meaning that goes beyond a simple achievement of 90 credit hours, even though this is a great accomplishment.
Here are explanations of a few of the main symbols, according to the Association of Former Students:
1. The 13 stripes in the shield refer to the 13 original states and symbolize the intense patriotism of graduates and undergraduates of A&M.
2. The five stars in the shield refer to phases of development of the student; mind or intellect, body, spiritual attainment, emotional poise, and integrity of character.
3. The ancient cannon, saber, and rifle symbolize that the men of Texas fought for their land and are determined to defend their homeland
Senior Rachel Hunt said "Getting my Aggie Ring was one of the best days of my life. I think I finally understand what it feels like to be a part of the Aggie Family, and every time I look down at my right ring finger I will be reminded of these four incredible years here in Aggieland."
Whether young or old, the Aggie Ring is something that brings all Aggies together and unites this family under its values and purposes.
