Banned Books Week

Because that's going to stop people from reading these books.

In honor of Banned Books Week, I thought I would share a few of the books that have been banned in the past and why someone (probably some mom that didn't want her precious child to be exposed to the blatant evil that some books contain) wanted them banned. I mean, these books are obviously filling our children's minds with horrible, horrible things (looking at you and your witchcraft, Harry Potter).

Here are some books that definitely deserved to be banned for these totally not idiotic and ridiculous reasons:

1. Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

Now this one is probably the best one because it actually has nothing to do with the book. Literally nothing. The book is a great children's book and teaches kids about different animals and colors, but of course it should be banned because the author is named Bill Martin Jr. Why is this a problem, you ask? Oh well because another Bill Martin Jr. wrote a book about Marxism. That's right, someone out there thought that the author of this beloved children's book also was a Marxist because nobody knows how to fact check anymore.

2. The Bible

Now this one is amazing. The Bible was banned for one thing: religious viewpoint. Let that one sit for awhile.

3. Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl

This book, a book about a young girl having to spend years in hiding, was banned for rebellion against parental authority. A young girl is forced to spend her childhood living in an attic because of her religion and later ends up dying in a concentration camp but god forbid she rebel a little. I mean, most kids go through a rebellious phase. Then again, Anne Frank wasn't like most kids. Most kids don't have to worry about hiding in an attic for two years, and why would some suburban mom want her child reading about that.

4. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Now, for people who haven't read this book, it's about a boy who struggles with what clearly is Autism. This is a great book and anyone who loves to read should definitely check it out. It is very cleverly written, but this isn't a book review so I'll stop there. Anyway, this book was banned for offensive language. Well in that case, lets ban more than half the books in existence. Because I definitely don't want my kids reading and learning about a boy with Autism because it has the word fuck in it.

5. Fifty Shades of Grey

Now this one was ridiculously banned because- actually yeah, go ahead and ban it.

In all seriousness though, while I understand parents not wanting their kids to read certain content, why does one person have to ruin it for everyone else? Some of the books that have been banned in the past and continue to be banned actually teach valuable lessons and are, quite frankly, good reads. And some of these "banned books" (which most are actually classics and loved by many) are restricted for really ridiculous reasons. If you don't want your kid to read a book, don't let them. That's your business, but I'll read whatever the hell I want.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
