If you are a student at Creighton University and have not yet been to any of the local concerts, you're missing out. Every year, Omaha hosts many great bands and artists, and earlier this week, I was lucky enough to see two such bands live in concert.
Of course, I'm talking about The Wombats and Mona. If you haven't heard of either of them, I suggest you go look them up, because both are perfect for anyone looking for some good alternative or indie music. I've had a few people asking me how the concert was, so I thought I'd share how this one measured up.
As someone who's been to quite a few concerts, it's safe to say that I'm not easily impressed by the glitz and glam of some of the larger venues. I prefer small, obscure venues, where the audience is close enough to interact with the bands themselves. Luckily, I was not disappointed here. Unlike some bands who are disappointed to play smaller venues, such as Omaha's The Waiting Room, both The Wombats and Mona seemed to feed off the energy of the audience, taking back as much as they gave, and enhancing the experience for everyone there.
In relation to the actual music, I may be a little biased. I happen to love The Wombats, as well as Mona. Any concert can be fun if you're constantly belting the lyrics to songs you actually know. However, I can still say that even if I hadn't been a Wombats fan before, I would be now. From playing unpublished instrumentals to improvising solos, it was obvious that these guys could rock. A friend of mine, who had only been a casual listener before, left the concert with the newest Wombats album, a testament to their ability to put on a good show.
When all was said and done, I found myself trying to compare that night with all of the other concerts I'd attended, and I have to say, The Wombats fared well. Overall, I have to say it was probably the second best concert I've ever attended. High energy, good music, and good fun all made that night one to remember.
Like I said, if you have not yet been to any of the local concerts here in Omaha, you're missing out.
