Before I discuss the movie, I will give a little history lesson on the Battle of Dunkirk. During World War II, there was a battle on Dunkirk, France between Nazi Germany and the Allies in 1940. France at the time was mostly captured by Germans, except Dunkirk's beach. 300,000 British soldiers had stood at Dunkirk's beach, with 25,000 French soldiers.
Germany had paused for about four days, giving the British time to come in small ships to save the British and French soldiers. The British used small boats because there was no docks for big boats. The British people on the small boats came to save British and French soldiers because the soldiers did not have any equipment and were surrounded by the Germans. To this movie, there were some pros and cons I would want to bring up.
My first pro would be, of course, Harry Styles. I was a little surprised how he did not seem like the main role. There were many main roles, Harry being one of them, but it did not focus on him as much as I thought the movie was going to.
I did not really mind because that is was he is going to get in the movie industry. One Direction fans see him as God, but when acting, he is presented in a different way.
Another pro that I thought was cool was at times, it felt like you were a soldier with the other ones. The sound was intense, as if you were hearing planes and shooting like you were there.
I liked how the rain was on the camera lens, making the people watching the film, make it feel as if they were there, as well. The film of the movie had the coloring effect changed, to make it feel as if you were at a war scene back in the 1940's while it is dark and cold outside.
I feel the acting was really good. The movie probably had a lot of stunt people though because there were many scenes where some of the main roles were about to sink underwater. It felt real with their acting though.
For my cons, I felt I was emotionally not there. It might be just because I did not know what was going on for the first half an hour. If you go to any war movie, I feel you have to know what's going on before you see the movie or research before you go. I did not know anything before coming in. I only really came for Harry Styles. It was hard to point out Harry Styles at first because all the soldiers looked the same to me.
After researching about the Battle of Dunkirk, I have more appreciation for the movie. If you are not a history person, then this is not your movie. I think I will watch it again to experience the movie more in depth. I would give this movie an 8/10. It is a good reminder for myself, if I ever go to see a historical war movie again, I will research about the movie beforehand.
