I saw "Deadpool" this past weekend with some friends. I had been looking forward to this movie since I first saw the trailer back in December. I love Marvel movies, and any superhero movies for that matter. I thought this movie looked absolutely hilarious. I also really, really love Ryan Reynolds so the fact that he was portraying the lead was a major bonus. Warning: spoilers for those that haven't seen it yet.
This movie surpassed every single one of my expectations.
For starters, this is hands down one of the funniest movies I have ever seen in my life. I thought the dialogue was so witty and funny, especially in making fun of the entire superhero genre at large. Deadpool, as I learned from the Internet and my many comic book reading friends, is known for his crude humor and vulgar language. HIs tactic of "breaking the fourth wall" and communicating with the audience is something I am all too familiar with being a theater kid. I loved every single aspect of the comedy side of this film. I also loved how funny it was for a superhero movie. In traditional Marvel fashion, the comedy is there as comic relief, not necessarily as a part of the superhero himself (except maybe "Iron Man").
In addition, he is known for his graphic violence, which this movie spared no expense with. The gore was so bad at times, I felt like the twelve-year-olds in the audience (that quite frankly should NOT have been in there) were going to be scarred for life.
I was hooked on this movie from the opening credits alone. I had never been more excited to see a movie that wasn't based on a book I had read (disclaimer: I don't read the comics these movies are based on, I just watch the movies).
Ryan Reynolds gave an incredible performance. I've always thought Ryan was funny (if you don't follow him on Twitter, you totally should because he is quite hilarious). I was very excited to see him as this character, The trailers alone had me in stitches. He surpassed my expectations 100%. I don't think I have ever laughed that hard in a film and had the film keep me laughing throughout.
I also loved how, despite it being an origin story, the movie didn't start out that way. Instead, it started out right in the middle of a big action scene and chose to tell the origin part of the story through flashbacks (though they didn't really feel like flashbacks at all). I really liked this "choppy" sort of storytelling because it kept the audience hooked and interested throughout, instead of opening with the origin story and ending with the climax being the big action scene.Though there was a climactic action scene at the end, I still really liked this particular format.
In addition, they talk about it being a love story (which most superhero movies always are because "damsel in distress" or "hero saves girl" is a common trope). However, this is not at all the point of this movie. This movie really focuses more on Deadpool and his transformation from Wade Wilson into the superhero/super slave persona, and less on his love for his girl Vanessa. It also really delves into the villain, Francis aka Ajax. He's not just your typical superhero movie villain. He's complex, complicated, and is really, really evil. This particular superhero movie is more of a revenge story than most, and I really enjoyed the action sequences and the confrontations between the hero and villain.
Before I spoil the entire movie for you, let me just say I really, really liked this movie. I'm a big action movie person, but this one was really one of the best I've seen. It had an incredible amount of humor, the right amount of romance, and just enough action to make it badass but not so much that it might as well be a slasher movie.
With all of this being said, this movie is NOT for children. I was very appalled by the amount of kids ages 10-12 in the audience the other night. The marketing for the film even explicitly states, "Please do not bring your kids to this movie". Now, I'm not judging these kids parents and their parental rights, but I just thought it was a lot for a young child's eyes.Seriously, go see Deadpool. I promise you won't regret it.
