There’s nothing quite like the holiday season. Whether you celebrate during this time or not, there’s one thing (almost) all us college kids do – go back home. While returning “home home” sometimes gets a bad reputation, there’s definitely perks to spending some time in your hometown residency.
First, the ever so obvious, your home friends are all in the same place! It’s fun to visit each other at your different schools and universities, but one weekend here and there is not enough time to spend with those who you were with pretty much everyday growing up.
Of course, this does mean everyone is home for the holidays. There’s a chance you see those who you weren’t super buddy-buddy with, so you have two choices: one, you be an adult, wave and/or say hello, or two, ignore, ignore, ignore.
Coming home from college means endless love and adoration from the ones you need it from the most- your pets. Returning home makes you wonder how you ever left them in the first place. Having your parents send you pictures of them can only satisfy your animal loving heart for so long.
I love my school as much as the next person, and probably even a little bit more, but a change of scenery never hurt anybody. Even though you’ve probably lived in your hometown for a good part of your life and might be able to navigate through it with your eyes closed, there’s something nostalgic about returning after you’ve been away for some time. Go to your after school hangout place of choice from high school or the local park you used to walk through on weekends. Instead of complaining about how boring it is being away from the freedom of college, appreciate the place that allowed you to get there.
Relaxation is key over any type of break. Parental nagging is bound to happen, because, hey, that’s life. But that nagging probably only irritates you so easily because at school there’s no one to tell you to clean your room or make sure to wash your dishes. So when this happens, remember that your parents are just being parents and do your job as a responsible adult (I say those two words lightly). Since there’s no classes over winter break, it’s perfectly acceptable to lie in bed, binge watch Netflix, and pig out on whatever your snack food of choice may be.
Don’t be that person to complain of being bored over winter break. Enjoy your time away from responsibilities and college issues. Once spring semester starts you’ll be wishing you soaked in this much-needed time.
