Resume Building 101: Tips From PINK Campus Reps

Any way you look at it, college is all about getting great experiences. One of the biggest dilemmas? Experiences that are fun versus experiences that help you with your future. Well, luckily, there are experiences that do both. As a PINK Campus Representative, you’ll get real-world experience while working with amazing people and an amazing brand. Applications are currently being accepted for the PINK Campus Representative Program, so I spoke with PINK Reps here at IU and these are some of the tips they recommended for building a resume beyond compare:

1. Be well-rounded.

"The PINK program is definitely the part of my resume that stands out the most, but it is also important to include other things such as academic achievements, honors programs you are a part of, and any other things you are involved in. You want to appear well-rounded rather than only focusing on one thing, and it's important to show that on your resume," says Sofia Stevenin, PINK Campus Rep.

2. Emphasize specific examples of what you have contributed.

"Instead of just describing what the job is, make sure to highlight what you have done for the job. Include specific examples, numbers, and statistics of how you helped to improve the company. It looks a lot better to point out exactly what you have done and have tangible evidence of what you can offer," says Sofia.

3. Show diversity.

"As a Speech Language Pathology major, being a Campus Rep isn't directly related to my chosen career. I took on this opportunity because I love the PINK brand and I love Indiana University, so being able to construct that intersection was an exciting opportunity! Even though it may not seem directly related, the leadership, planning, and teamwork skills I have learned through this program will be generalized across everything I do! I also hope that being a PINK Rep will exemplify my interests outside of my major and will set me apart from other resumes full of activities only related to the field of speech and hearing," says Emma Bonifield, PINK Campus Rep.

4. Don't be afraid to promote yourself.

"We all know that bragging about yourself in everyday conversation is not a great way to make friends, but I learned through the PINK Rep selection process that being confident with your accomplishments is key to achieving your goals. As Campus Reps, we were able to interview girls to create our Campus Team and therefore had the opportunity to be on the other side of the interview table. This experience allowed me to have the perspective of the interviewer, and therefore, realize that the candidates who were the most confident were the ones that were the best for the job and not arrogant. The opportunity to be on both sides of the interview process will be extremely beneficial as I pursue my next endeavors," says Emma.

5. Make it visually appealing.

Not only is it important to make your resume seem professional, but it should also catch the attention of the interviewer. "Especially for me as an advertising major, I wanted my resume to not only be good but also look good because that's a first impression," says Sofia. Spend time on creating your resume to ensure that you are taken seriously.

Now that you have the insider info on how to stand out with your resume, go make your college experience both valuable and undeniably fun by applying to be a PINK Campus Representative now!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
