To The Girl Who Thinks You Can't Be A Christian And A Feminist, Not Everything The Bible Said Should Be Taken At Face Value

Last week I was scrolling through Facebook when I stumbled upon an Odyssey article. Typically I'll scroll past these, but the title of this particular one caught my attention.

"I'm A Christian Girl And I'm Not A Feminist, Because God Did Not Intend For Women To Be Equals."

This has to be a joke. This must be some sort of click-bait that I see roaming the internet every day. Nevertheless, I clicked on the article and read all the way to the end. I expected some sort of, "Gotcha!" or "Just kidding!".

Nothing.

This girl had exposed herself online as a woman who believes that men are superior to women. What. The. Fuck. What the actual fuck?

Now that we got my anger and cursing out of the way, let's discuss my side of the story, from a strong feminists point of view.

Let me start this off by saying the quotes that this girl pulls from the Bible are true, and I am not here to diminish or rebuff her Christian beliefs in any way. I am simply here to explain my side of the story and point out some information that this girls article seems to lack.

Let's start this response off with my side of the story.

I love being a woman. Women fucking rock! We are capable of so many things, and I am so proud to call myself a strong, independent woman. I would not be where I am today if I did not have a strong group of women telling me to be completely and utterly myself, and to not let a man dictate what I do and how I go about it.

I was not born to be a wife. I was not born to be the only one who cleans the house. I was not born to be the one who is emotional because it's my "time of the month". I was not born to wait on men's hand and feet. I was born to be whoever I want, and no man is going to change the way I think about that.

Now let's move into where this girls article lacks some information.

I am not saying you shouldn't believe in Christ and live without Christian values, but just because some bible verse that you interpreted says that men are superior to women does not always mean it has to be held true to this day.

Leviticus 11:10 "And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you."

Is it still a sin to eat fish?

Leviticus 10:6 "Uncover not your heads, neither rend your clothes; lest ye die, and lest wrath come upon all the people."

Are we going to burn if we wear ripped jeans?

Leviticus 19:27 "Ye shall not round the corners of your heads."

Are round haircuts bad? (Yes, they are ugly, but are they BAD?)

All of these ideas are explicitly stated in the bible, but we clearly do not follow through with them today. So why take what was written in a book years ago to an idea that diminishes your worth?

You are capable of doing so many amazing things without needing to see if a man needs a beer before you do it.

To the girl who wrote the article (or to anyone who believes in what she wrote), this is not to bash you. This is to inform you that being a feminist is so empowering and AMAZING, and it does not mean that you are putting yourself against God in any way. He will love you no matter what, that's the whole idea of Christianity, right?

You can believe whatever you want to believe, but be wary of people who have more evidence to de-buff yours.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
