The other day, I walked into Salad & Co. in NYC, wanting to get some of that delicious lettuce (said no one ever…I just literally had no time to get real solid food) and make my train.
What I actually got was a lesson that not everyone out there understands how to treat customer service employees with respect.
"You!" a lady with messy blonde hair barged into the salad place, pointing angrily at the innocent man behind the counter who was in the middle of scooping Romaine into a bowl. "You messed up my salad! I asked for walnuts, and you gave me almonds!"
The man just stared back…along with all the customers and cashiers.
"I'm going to sue – if I ate these, I could have died!" she continued to shout. "Fire him! Where is the manager? You need to be fired!"
I get it. If you're allergic to a certain nut, I would be super angry if someone put it in my salad.
But the way she barged in yelling made me feel like she would have done so even if he just put in onions instead of tomatoes.
"I need to speak to your manager," she said, only to proceed to go around the counter and into the kitchen where the manager then walked out with her.
I'll spare you the gory details and every customer's shocked expression, but long story short, the woman was allergic to gluten. The almonds ended up being gluten-free just like the walnuts and the lady got her money back, but then she got angry they didn't offer to make her a new salad. She left in a heap of red anger and everyone in line after that point was super polite and smiley.
This "episode." if you will, just made me think about how we treat customer service employees. They have to deal with the worst of people every day. They have to put that smile on their face and wait on our every hand and foot it seems because as the saying goes here often in America, "the customer is always right."
I call bulls**t! They are people too, just in uniform. They are people too, who deserve respect and courtesy just like us. This is their job. It's not who they are.
Did that lady never ever ever make a mistake in her work before? No! We all mess up or misunderstand. And if you are deathly allergic to a nut and have the possibility of dying from eating gluten, stress that a bit more when ordering.
Anyway. Lady, if you happen to somehow find this article…I doubt you'll do it…but please, go say sorry. He didn't deserve to be spoken to that way.
