My New Year's Resolutions

Because 2016 was the longest year of my life.

My New Year's Resolutions

2016 seemed like the longest year of my life. I had plenty of adventures, new experiences, and fun times, but the year was also full of shocking moments making me think I was living in some sort of medium between a nightmare and a dream.

I usually don’t make resolutions, but after 2016, I will do anything for a great 2017. After much evaluation and contemplation, I have come up with my New Year’s resolutions for 2017. (I have 7 for good luck, as well as my some of my favorite pictures from 2016.)

1. Prevent 2017 from becoming 2016 2.0.

Or alternatively, 2016 S. I will try to be more optimistic and happier with life, change what I can, and try to find the silver lining even in garbage situations. Come next New Year’s, I want to be able to look back at 2017 and think 2016 was worth living through to get to 2017.

2. Live a healthier lifestyle.

I know, everyone makes a similar resolution. I do plan to eat better and exercise more, but I am also planning to take life a little less seriously, so I won't implode from stress. I will take more personal time and do things I want to do to de-stress.

3. Continue giving it my best in school.

I miraculously made it through last semester. I worked really hard, and it all paid off immensely. I want to continue this streak and show OU what I’m made of. I will study hard, ask questions, and be prepared for classes.

4. Be unapologetically me.

I’m through walking on eggshells to make people happy. If people want to be around me or be my friend, great. If not, oh well. Life is far too short for fair-weather friends. In the same token, I’m not hanging around toxic people who drag me down. I will bid them "Bye, Felicia" and continue on with life doing things my way.

5. Create more.

I had so much creative energy in 2016 that went to waste. In 2017, I want to do more with that. I want to photograph, draw, paint, write, cook, etc., the images in my head. I want to bring all that vision to life. If it doesn't come out the way I want, I can always try again until I get my results.

6. Be a better friend.

I feel like I sacrificed some personal relationships in 2016 to succeed in school. I will be there for my friends when they need me and always be willing to listen, talk, and spend time with them. However, I will also give them space when they need it.

7. Have more adventures than last year.

I will give it to 2016. It was packed with some great adventures, like studying in Denmark and Germany, exploring my home state of Oklahoma, storm chasing, graduating with my associate degree, and transferring to OU. I have no idea what sorts of adventures I will have in 2017, but I’m not letting those opportunities pass me by. I will apply for those internships, travel (even if it’s just to places in Oklahoma), and create my own fun, memorable adventures.

Here is to a great 2017. Happy New Year!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
