Traditionally, Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer for Americans. It's a time to relax with family and friends, enjoy nice weather, cookout with some picnic food, and enjoy some drinks. However, as fun as these things are, they are not the real meaning of Memorial Day. On this Memorial Day--and every day--we need to remember those who have served our nation and have given the ultimate sacrifice of their lives in order for us to enjoy the freedoms we've been given.
We are very fortunate to live in a country where we are free to practice whatever religion we choose, to say and do what we believe, and to stand up and voice our opinions when we don't agree with our leaders--among many other rights that so many around the world are denied. Many times, we get used to having these rights freely given to us. We forget that these rights did not come free to us—someone had to pay in order for us to enjoy these freedoms.
Millions of brave men and women have chosen to serve the United States by joining the armed forces over the past 239 years of this nation's existence. Many of these men and women returned home to their families once they had bravely fought, but many also never had the chance to return home. These men and women gave up their lives so that future generations they would never even see could enjoy the rights that we as Americans are guaranteed. These people were ordinary citizens like you and me who chose to take an extraordinary risk in the name of freedom. On Memorial Day, these are the people we need to remember and whose lives and sacrifices should never be forgotten.
Is it wrong to enjoy the Memorial Day holiday by having fun with your friends and family? Of course not. Those who served did so so that Americans could enjoy life as we know it. However, when celebrating with your family and friends, remember that Memorial Day is not a joyous occasion for all. On this day, many families are mourning the loss of a loved one who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Enjoy this holiday and be thankful that we live in a nation where your basic rights are given to you without question. However, in the middle of all your fun, don't forget to remember why you are able to celebrate the start of summer: because brave heroes over the years have sacrificed so we that could maintain our way of life.
