First of all let me say that at the bottom of this article there is a list of my top eight series list to read if you ever feel like getting back into reading. Feel free to just skip down to those too.
Reading has been a fun pastime throughout the years, but in today’s society, it looks as if it’s become minuscule and unimportant. People are too into watching TV, and Netflix, and not picking up a book and reading. Even reading on a kindle for fun has gone down in these past years. What has happened? It used to be that people would sit down outside with a book and read. I know I did this all the time when I was younger, and even have done it a few times now. But now, technology and shows being so much more accessible, has gotten everyone watching Netflix.
Now, don’t get me wrong, Netflix is amazing, I have had my fair share of binge watching moment. Those include great shows such as Numbers, Leverage, and the newer Netflix series, Fuller House. But still, what has happened to reading for fun? Even reading on a kindle or device from fun has plummeted. This question stems from the question I proposed in the title, is reading for fun still relevant? To analyze this question you really must look at today’s society because some things that were relevant many years ago aren’t relevant today. For example, you don’t have to grow your own food, you can just go to the grocery store and buy some. There are so many other examples that I won’t bore you with those, you are reading this because you want to know what I think about reading for fun. Here is was I think, “yes, reading for fun is relevant”. It is important to read for fun and not just watch shows all the time and not just for school.
Yes books for school are definitely important, but I think that a lot of you would agree with me on this, I honestly don’t think that reading as many books as we have to in school is a good thing for students. This is because, growing up, kids learn to not like books because of analyzing every…single…detail in a book. I know that it ruined books I may have liked if I were just reading them on my own time.
Books, in general, are essential to a person’s growth and imagination. Shows give you the images and pictures, but books, books make you actually have to imagine the scenes and characters. I know, kinda crazy right? Well it gets crazier because not only does it allow you imagine it, best part is that your mind can’t HELP but imagine what’s going on, because it wants to understand what you’re reading, and in order accomplish that while reading a narrative, it imagines what you’re reading.
Reading is a huge part of growing up. You know those awful books you had to read in school? Well, as you all know, those are books are the ones you are REQUIRED to read. They are ones that you didn’t want to read because you were forced to analyze so much detail. Reading a book for fun is so much nicer. I honestly believe that it helps kids be active even if they are sitting. The television doesn’t leave much to the imagination, but when reading a book, especially one that is fun to read and is engaging, the reader can enjoy a fun story AND work out their imagination and mind a bit as well.
So, reading in general is so important to the human mind. It allows them to imagine situations and scenes and characters. Reading for school gets boring and tedious, however reading for fun engages your mind and is also an enjoying activity, enabling your mind to play out the story.
