The other day, someone asked, "Are you and your boyfriend still together? I haven't seen you post about him much on Facebook or Instagram." I had to keep myself from laughing. Is that what this world has come to? Does a couple's presence on social media really matter that much? Call me old fashioned, but I just don't get it. There are several reasons why you don't see much of my boyfriend and I on social media, so here's my long answer to that person's short, and frankly kinda weird, question.
I think it's annoying. You're lying if you say that you don't cringe at least a little bit when you see a sappy couple post. I'll be honest, I'm guilty of a few of these during my almost five year relationship. But I've learned that those posts are actually super unnecessary. If you're in a strong relationship, you don't need to post on Facebook how much you love them. You just have to shoot them a text and tell them.
The rest of the world doesn't have to know everything that happens with us. I would feel uncomfortable if everyone always knew what we were up to. Sure, I'll post a funny picture of him cuddling with his cat, but will never give Facebook a play-by-play of our date nights. It's just weird, y'all.
I don't really spend a whole lot of time on social media in the first place. Sure, I'll check up on it every once in a while, but I don't often find myself staring at my phone screen for hours. Especially if I'm with my boyfriend. We're both so busy that getting on our phones when we hang out is basically an insult. The point is, I don't find myself on my phone enough when I'm around him to be constantly taking pictures of him and updating the world on how we're doing as a couple. There's SO much more to life than social media.
As long as I know our relationship is stable, that's all I need. I don't have to post about it incessantly, or remind everyone that he's my boyfriend and that yes, we're still together. Will I post something about him every once in a while? HECK yes. But it's not to remind the world that he exists. Those posts are more for me than they are for everyone else.
Moral of the story: there's so much more to life than your social media presence. Heck, I've met plenty of people who are completely different in person than they are online. That's my goal. I don't think it's fair to give everyone every single detail about what's going on in my relationship. I like to keep a lot of that to myself and the people I'm closest to, not the entire Facebook and Instagram populations. So, next time you're wondering why someone isn't posting much anymore, remember that there is life outside of social media. Maybe you should unplug, and go join in.
