Babe, baby, sugar. We have heard them all, whether we are in a relationship or not. Yet, one thing we've all learned from our relationships is that our significant other's nicknames come in waves. They change with how comfortable we get with each other, which could even be by the hour. Here are the different stages of a relationship, and the nicknames that come with it.
0 to three months: any variation of babe or baby
You are getting to know each other. You do not want to be the one to slip the nickname out first, but sometimes it just happens. Who knows if that person hates pet names? No other way to find out, other than just jumping on the nickname train.
Four to six months: enter any name that has to do with food
Honey, sugar, muffin, cupcake. One day, you just got really hungry and probably accidentally called your significant other what you wanted to eat at the time. Well, that kinda stuck and now you can't stop calling them that even though each time you do, it makes you super hungry.
Seven months to one year: literally, anything.
You could be passing a dog and think that "puppy" is now an acceptable name for your significant other. Do they remind you of a furry pet? Let's hope not, but you thought it was a good idea at the time. It doesn't matter if the thing you saw fits their personality, you are desperate for a new nickname so you don't get hungry every time their name pops up on your phone.
One year, plus : back to babe
You have done babe, food, and then the random things you see. By this point, you are done trying to be creative. Why did you ever stop using babe to begin with? It's like you and your significant other have a mutual agreement to stick with that name. You are silently thanking yourself for letting that name slip in the first place.
While most of us won't openly admit that we call our significant other nicknames, we all do it. Let those names come out in the open, unless it has to do with food. Then, do us all a favor and don't make us hungry every time you bring them up.
