I think I had a very different experience than most readers growing up. I absolutely hated reading. No matter what my mom would do, she couldn't get me to sit down and enjoy a book. I don't know what changed along the way, but escaping into a good book is now one of my favorite pastimes. Through books, I am magically transported to different worlds filled with quirky characters. It makes me happy when I discover new pieces of literature to read. With this in mind, I'd like to share the books that have impacted me the most over the years.
In no particular order, the following is a list of my personal favorite books that I have read and would highly recommend to anyone looking for a good read.
1. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
What it's about: Cath and her twin sister, Wren, have always bonded over the magical world of Simon Snow. As they grew older, Wren began to distance herself from the fandom entirely. And now that they're going to college, Cath is completely on her own. As she adjusts to her new life, she realizes that her love for the World of Mages may be holding her back from reality.
Why you should read this book: I was absolutely blown away by the realistic characterization in this book, especially the relationship between Cath and Levi. Each character in this novel had distinctive traits that made them stand out. I could relate to the emotions that Cath experienced. In addition, Simon Snow's story is highly reminiscent of the Harry Potter series. If you want to cater to your inner fangirl, or fanboy, this story is perfect for you.
2. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
What it's about: After the death of James Halliday, creator of the virtual utopia known as the OASIS, 18-year-old Wade Watts dedicated his life to the Hunt. When he finds the first clue, a copper key inscribed with a riddle, he unknowingly starts a dangerous race against Nolan Sorrento and Innovative Online Industries, a company set out to ruin the world's only escape from its ugly reality.
Why you should read this book: The world that the author has built is incredible. From the description, I was able to paint a vivid picture of both the real and virtual world. In a way, this novel is a social commentary about the rapid development of human societies. It really makes you consider the sustainability of our planet and where we are headed. The novel is chock-full of references from 80s pop culture.
3. Binge by Tyler Oakley
What it's about: This novel is a collection of personal essays written by popular internet personality, Tyler Oakley.
Why you should read this book: I found myself laughing at so many of the chapters that described the ups and downs of Tyler Oakley's life. His own personal style and voice resonate through the pages of this novel. The writing was compelling and kept me going.
4. Being Henry David by Cal Armistead
What it's about: "Hank" is a 17-year-old boy who wakes up in Penn Station with no memory of who he is or how he got there. His only possession is a copy of Walden, a novel written by transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau. Thinking this is a sign, he makes his way to Walden Pond. While on his journey, he starts to recall his past, but he's not sure if he wants to remember.
Why you should read this book: I was originally drawn to this book because of the cover, but what I got from it was so much more. I felt strangely inspired while I was turning the pages of this novel. It really drove me to think about things that have happened in my life.
5. Harken by Kaleb Nation
What it's about: Michael Asher was born with the ability to read someone's deepest thoughts through their eyes. Using the desperation of others, he earns a decent living exposing the truth about the people closest to them. One night, Michael is confronted by an assassin that sends him running for his life.
Why you should read this book: I was really drawn to the story, enough so that I actually preo-rdered the book and received a signed copy from the author. The action scenes were well-written and had me at the edge of my seat. I couldn't pull myself away from reading this story.
I hope you take a chance on at least one of the novels that I recommended! Have strong feelings about any of these books? Feel free to let me know in the comments below!
