Recapping the ZTA Crown Formal

The weekend of April 24th was an exciting one for the girls of Zeta Tau Alpha. As the school year came to a close, they had one last fun-filled weekend before finals to spend with their friends, family, and sisters.

On the afternoon of Friday, April 24th, the Zetas hosted their annual Family Day Crawfish Boil. The members invited their parents, siblings, cousins, and many more to join them at their house for some delicious seafood. Members of the parent's club, as well as alumnae women, helped to serve the crawfish to the girls and of their families. Afterwards, the girls had the opportunity to show off their beautiful home and take pictures with their families in front of the house.

Saturday night was the moment that all the members, especially the freshmen pledge class, had all been waiting for: Crown Formal. The event was held at the Renaissance Hotel, near Perkins Rowe in Baton Rouge. The fall 2014 and spring 2015 pledge classes arrived first, with their parents and dates, to have dinner before the presentation. The meal started with salad and bread, and the menu continued with chicken, accompanied with vegetables and cheese grits. For dessert, the attendees had an option between traditional cake and cheesecake.

After about an hour of dining and socializing, the members -- all of whom are required to wear all-white formal gowns -- began to line up with their fathers, or whomever they had chosen to present them. The members were presented alphabetically and escorted to the center of the ballroom, where each girl was presented with a white violet and a hug from their escort. They then went and joined their pledge class in the front. Once all of them were presented, each member was smiling from ear to ear, happy to have the privilege of spending such a wonderful evening with all of the people who love them.

After presentations, the girls said goodbye to their parents, and the rest of the chapter members began to arrive. The band, D Play, played all night long, entertaining the girls with classics and favorites. Awards were also given out. Sophomore Caitlin Drott and freshman Tessa Bourgeois, received the Big Sister/Little Sister Scholarship Award; Maggie Jack and Darby Thompson received the Best Big/Little Award.

Sophomore Anna Wright received the Scholarship New Member Award. Junior Julie Farrar received the Highest Scholarship Award. Sophomore Claire Davis received the Scholarship Improvement Award. Senior Katie Silva received the Spirit Award. Senior Meaghan Jeansonne received the Most Outstanding Sisterhood Award. Abby Winn received the Most Outstanding Senior Award. Cherie Walters received the Most Outstanding Junior Award. And Kristen Hillburn received the Most Outstanding Sophomore Award.

For graduating seniors, this was one last night to have fun with the sisters who have been by their side for the past four years. For the freshmen, this was only the beginning of a lifetime of memories. Thanks so much to Director of Socials Sara Ducote and Parents Club Chair Mary Katherin Arotin for putting on two unforgettable events!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
