Sons of Anarchy is a show about a Northern California motorcycle gang. The gang is involved in, among other things, illegal gun running, drugs and pornography. More than that, it is a show about family. With a story that borrows elements from both Shakespearean and modern tales, it is a story of ghosts, of love and loss, sacrifice and redemption, and it is not something that you should be missing.
So, if you haven't watched the hit show that ended it's incredible seven-season run on FX in 2014, here are some reasons why you should binge-watch it:
1. The show is always action-packed.
There's always something crazy going on. Whether it's a gang shoot-out or an exploding gun warehouse, there's action-packed scenes in every episode.
2. The show has plenty of drama to keep you entertained.
Seriously. There's so much drama. There's kidnapping (at least 4-5 times each season), shootings, fist fights, explosions, break-ins, lots of internal conflict in the main characters, club drama, relationship drama and of course, cops vs. outlaws drama.
3. The patriarch of SAMCRO is none other than Hellboy himself, Ron Perlman.
While he's not sitting down and petting cats in the series, he does still set some fires, both literally and figuratively in the lives of the people he loves. His character is one I love to watch change as the series goes on.
4. There's a lot of unexpected (and often raunchy) humorous moments.
Sometimes, the humor comes at those times where things couldn't be going worse and someone says something that makes you do a double-take and laugh. Most of the awkward, raunchy humor comes at the hands of the guy in the GIF, known as Tig Trager. He's a particularly disturbing individual, but his character development throughout the series is epic, even with everything he faces.
5. Katey Sagal's character, Gemma Teller-Morrow, is kick-ass, and she is the true Queen of the Bikers.
For everyone used to seeing Katey as the mom on 8 Simple Rules or as Peg Bundy in Married... With Children, you will definitely be in for a shock. Gemma is a complete 180 from Peg Bundy; she's crazy, protective of her family, and she is willing to go through hell to protect her family and her club. She also helps stir up some crazy conflicts throughout the series as well. I can only hope to look as good as her at 55, because she is #goals.
6. Katey's husband, Kurt Sutter, writes and directs the series, but also has a role in the show.
Sutter portrays a character known as Otto Delaney. Otto is in prison for the entire time he's shown on the series, but even from prison, he does his best to help his club. Kurt not only writes the show amazingly well, but he also plays an incredibly dynamic character.
7. Each character has a compelling story line.
With each character you meet throughout the series, you'll either love them or hate them, but no matter what, you'll get sucked into their story line. (In the GIF we have Ryan Hurst, who plays Opie Winston. He plays the lead character's best friend.)
7. The supporting cast always keeps things interesting.
As anyone who's ever acted before knows, a show is nothing without its company. The supporting cast of SOA may be on and off screen frequently, but whenever they make their appearance, it's not only a treat, but something that makes you smile. (In the GIF, we have David Labrava portraying Happy Lowman and fun fact: Mr. Labrava is the only cast member of the show who has been a part of an actual motorcycle gang. He was a member of the Hell's Angels!)
8. The lead actor, Charlie Hunnam, is smoking hot.
Charlie plays Jax Teller, the son of Gemma Teller and John Teller, founder of SOA. Jax has a lot of internal conflict throughout the series as he tries to make his father John's goals for SOA and SAMCRO a reality. Jax's struggle through the whole series becomes a major focal point and something that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
9. The show's plot is loosely based around Shakespeare's Hamlet.
For anyone who knows about the play Hamlet, you know that the relationship between Hamlet and Queen Gertrude (his mom) is a relationship with a great deal of issues involved. The relationship between Jax and his mother Gemma is a relationship full of love, but also full of mistrust because of things that happen throughout the series.
10. Maggie Siff, who portrays Dr. Tara Knowles, Jax's high school sweetheart and love interest in the series, was also Don Draper's temptress Rachel Menkin in Mad Men.
For all you Mad Men fans out there, here's another chance to see Maggie Siff at her finest. Tara's character development throughout the series is one of the craziest, most tumultuous ones I've ever seen in a character in any show, but it sucks you in all the more.
11. If nothing else convinces you to watch this show, take a look at all of this eye candy.
The entire series is on Netflix if you want to get a jump on binging it. I hope anyone who decides to watch it falls in love with the show just like I did!
Remember, my wonderful readers: look this life in the eye and live it till you die.
