Why I Write

The reason I write even when my time is limited.

Why I Write
Mackenzie Webb

When discovering that I write for Odyssey, many respond with the normal "Oh that's cool!" or even "Ugh THAT website." But, occasionally I'll receive the question of "Why do you write?" What a good question that is. In a time where I'm consumed with school work up to my ears and side involvement in college, why bother to put away more time write an article that I'm not getting a grade for?

Writing an article involves much more than just writing and sending in an article. Not only do I have the ability to use my creative juices, but also have the chance to be apart of something great. As many of you know, I am part of the Mississippi State Odyssey community. Therefore I am able to be surrounded with other writers with a passion just like me. We are able to discuss ideas, and bounce articles off of each other in the greatest of ways. Having this group also allows to form bonds and be able to connect with other writers who are going through what we are going through.

Another top reason I write is because my brain needs it. After a full week of school, homework, and being told what/what not to study, it's nice to be able to write freely with no limitations. Writing uses the creative, and imaginative parts of my brain that I often don't get the chance to use academically. As I mentioned before, while writing these articles, I don't have the pressure of whether I will get an A or fail. Now of course people have the right to respond with their comments or suggestions, but nothing that could effect my GPA. Either way, writing gives me a nice reason to relax and just write what I have on my mind.

Even in a busy week I find time to write my article because I know it can be my saving grace, and my freedom of expression in my week. I am more than happy that I made the decision to apply to join the team, and was even more elated when Devin Edgar (our Editor-in-Chief) accepted me with open arms to the team. I always look forward to sharing my mind at the end of the week and this opportunity has helped me do that, and maybe has touched some people along the way. If anyone has an opportunity like this, I highly suggest looking into it because I'm so glad I can write and freely express myself! Write on writers, and read on readers!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
