Why Summer Just Isn't The Same As A College Student

Why Summer Just Isn't The Same As A College Student

1. You'll miss your best friends.

We all had those friends in high school that we said we'd never grow apart from, and well, chances are, we all did. Now that you're in college, you have a core group of friends at school that you spend almost every waking moment with, and they've become your support system. What will you do without them for three months?

2. You had more to do on weekends during the Semester.

It's nice and relaxing to be home for the first few weekends when you can kick back and relax with an HGTV marathon, but you'll start to get a little restless when you realize that there are no Thursday socials in your hometown, or day drinks on Friday, or parties on Saturday….

3. You had more free time on weekdays during the Semester.

It might have seemed like you were always busy when you had a final or group project due, but in reality, during the school year, you were in class about 13 hours a week. During the summer you probably have an internship or a job someone, that's about 1.5 days worth of work. This will really cut into your ability to go to the gym at noon, when nobody is there, or to get an impromptu manicure, when you have six hours to kill before dinnertime.

4. It's not like you're getting a glowing tan.

Summer is no longer like it was when you were 14. and you spent it hanging out at the neighborhood pool being a size zero, and having nothing to do but lay around. You have responsibilities now, and you need to make money and be an adult. So you just don't have time for total relaxation.

5. Commuting.

Do I really even need to explain this one? At school you can roll out of bed 15 minutes before class and be perfectly fine, over the summer you need to set aside about three hours of your day to drive to and from work. That is ridiculous. Real life isn't cool.

6. Turner Dining Hall Doesn't Exist Back Home.

There is no other place where you can spend monopoly money on such a wide selection of food. Either you have to pay real money at restaurants back home or you have one option to eat for dinner. You'll never have this kind of selection and price ever again in your life. RIP free Qdoba.

7. You have to pay to use the gym.

Much like my previous point, in order to have the amenities you get at McComas gym for free, you'll have to pay for it somewhere else. You'll pull out your Hokie P once or twice this summer and try to use it to get into your gym, but it will just be a sad reminder that you're not in Blacksburg anymore.

8. You probably hang out with Netflix more than anyone you know.

Netflix will probably be your best friend when there's nothing going on any night of the week, and you're left with nothing to do. But honestly, that's not really that different from school, so maybe this one won't be so bad.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
