With 35 percent of our campus Greek-affiliated, it is hard to imagine not joining a fraternity or sorority. It may seem a little intimidating, especially if you don't have any family members or friends who have gone Greek before you. No matter your situation or background, I encourage everyone to consider joining Greek life. Here are a few reasons why going Greek at Miami is a great decision:
1. We're the "Mother of Fraternities"
Greek life has been a part of Miami's heritage for 175 years. We are proud to have five alpha chapters on campus, which has earned us the nickname "Mother of Fraternities".
2. We are home to over 50 chapters
Miami boasts more than 50 fraternities and sororities, which include social, business, engineering and music organizations. Each of our chapters are committed to the five pillars of the Greek community: Scholarship & Learning, Service and Philanthropy, Leadership, Community, and Brotherhood and Sisterhood.
3. Emphasis on academics
Scholarship and Learning, one of the five pillars that shape our community, has major significance for all of our members. Our fraternity and sorority members consistently earn higher GPAs than all men, women and campus averages. Our academic excellence goes to show that Greek members show strong leadership both in the classroom and in the community.
4. Community involvement
Each chapter at Miami is committed to the betterment of our community. Last year, our fraternities and sororities completed nearly 50,000 hours of community service and donated over $200,000 to charitable causes. Each chapter has their own philanthropy, which gives members the opportunity to get involved for a good cause. Each year, our chapters host 5k's, bake sales and other fun events in order to raise money for their philanthropic efforts.
5. Second-year living arrangements
One of the most exciting parts about joining a fraternity or sorority is the opportunity to live with your pledge class during your sophomore year. Men are able to live in their respective fraternity houses, and women get to live in the sorority dorms which are all located in one quad on campus. Our sorority women get to enjoy their respective suites, which contain kitchens and living spaces.
6. Opened doors
Joining a fraternity or sorority creates a wide array of opportunities both in college and post-grad. During your time as a collegiate Greek member, you will be able to run for leadership positions and gain valuable resume-builders which can set you apart from the next candidate when searching for a career. Additionally, going Greek allows you to expand your social circle and surround yourself with people who have similar interests.
If you are on the fence about whether or not you should go Greek, I hope that this article has convinced you. There are so many benefits to joining a fraternity or sorority and you will certainly find your niche.
