When you think about taking care of yourself, the first thing that probably comes to mind is eating healthier or working out more. However, many different types of wellness are important to be healthy overall, and one of those ways is creative wellness. In today's society, creativity is often overlooked, but all types of wellness can positively impact the other. Creative wellness is just as important as any other type of wellness, but here are some benefits that it specifically brings.

You think about things differently

By bringing more creativity into your life, you are able to think about things more creatively. It's a positive influence that happens in a positive cycle.

You get to try something new

Creativity doesn't have to be just drawing, dancing, or singing. Those are the most common, but there are other ways that you can be creative. You can try as many different ways that you want to, all you have to do is what's best for you.

Stress less

By doing things that support your creative wellness, you're going to be less stressed. It's a good study break, and it gives you the chance to do something out of the ordinary routine. It also makes your brain more prepared to deals with unforeseen situations, so you can deal with stress better.

Self-confidence

Creating new things that you're proud of and being able to show it off to other people can give you confidence in other areas of life. Believing in yourself is important, and it's important to foster that feeling.

More focus

Working your brain in creative ways makes your brain work better, which allows you to focus on other important tasks. Creative wellness brings positive changes to the way your body functions.

Improves memory

So many ways to be creative are also great at improving your memory. Since you're using more of your brain, you're making it able to remember more.

Allows you to express yourself

Your creativity is something that other people can't define for you. Not only does what you create form a parent of your identity, but your identity is also influenced by what type of art you do.

Connect with other people

When people are creative in similar ways, it creates a connection between two people. Even if it's not something that you have in common, presenting the ways that you express your creativity can start conversations. I started writing with Odyssey in order to express myself and keep writing, but it has given me new connections because people have talked to me about my articles in person about things that we have in common.

Developing long-term habits

By starting a habit that betters your creative wellness, the habits that you develop then can make you more able to develop new, positive habits. By making one change in your life, you're able to make more long-term changes in the future.

 Helping others

Whether you're volunteering your time or creating something for someone else for a gift, your creative skills can be used to positively impact the lives of others. Also, by being creatively well, you can encourage other people to be more creatively well too.

Understanding people who are different than you

By accessing the creative part of yourself, you're able to understand the past and other cultures through more creative ways. One way is to learn a new language, which directly creates new connections between people who you might not have connections with before. Another way is simply just to make connections over the art you create and appreciate with other people.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
