Why I Write

And why you should too

Why I Write
Sabrina Stevens

Writing is one of the best ways to get feelings out.

Whether those forms of writing are poems, novels or a giant block of text to get out emotions, they all have the same job. Words, both typed and written, can help relieve stress and reveal any emotions that you may have hidden deep down.

I, personally, write poems when I have emotions that I don’t know how to deal with otherwise. Most of the time, I don’t even finish the poems that I start to write. If you look on my phone, there are more than twenty incomplete poems in my notes.

But I also like to write novels. I’ve always been a creative person and a perfectionist. It is a part of my nature. Novels are my way of getting all of that out and onto paper. I create a plot and the characters and my perfectionistic characteristics do the rest.

I also happen to be a Writing major in college, but that doesn’t define my writing. Sure, it may get most of my time, but I still do some freelance writing as well.

And you can too.

You don’t have to be good at writing to be able to write. I’m sure you’ve read fifty shades of books that were not written well. You could write the book that you have always wanted to read. Trust me, everybody wants a new story to read.

Even if you feel like your story, novel or mental story, isn’t good enough, you can always write up a summary of the story and pitch it to someone else and make a movie or a TV show of it. People want new things to watch as well.

One of the usual topics of my poetry is change within society or the issue with society today. Writing about these issues and publishing them, even on a small platform, can help fix the issues that you see in society. You can reach out to people that don’t know to understand the issues that you bring to light.

Writing is my favorite way to think and process situations that I’ve been through, especially when I’m able to just let the words flow out of my mind and right onto the page. I have notebooks full of situations and emotions that I’ve been through. I can read the poem and remember exactly what was going on in my life.

Most writing that a person will do in their life is writing a paper for an assignment. They will complain about every word that they will type on their computer. They see the acronym MLA, and they will cower in fear.

But just like those argumentative papers that you had to write in English 101, you can get your point across, just in more creative ways.

I write because I don’t know how to deal with my emotions. I write because I have a story that I want to put out into the world. I write because I want to make a difference.

You can too.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
